What are the cheapest ways to get to Amsterdam, Chicago, and Dublin? A guide to the different travel methods, what they cost, and how convenient they are:
What are the cheapest ways to get to Amsterdam?
By Airplane
Flying to Amsterdam can be a fairly cheap option if you manage to avoid peak times. You can actually get a one way ticket from London to Amsterdam for as little as £22, but it can also cost as much as £230. If this is the cheapest option or not completely depends on if you get the best price, and your costs of getting to the nearest airport that has flights to Amsterdam.
By Bus
You could technically go to Amsterdam by bus. A bus journey from London to Amsterdam takes around 11-15 hours, so it’s not a popular option. It generally costs around £30-45 for a one way trip. You can get these buses from most major UK cities, but it seems London is one of the cheapest starting locations. However, it could still be cheaper than the combined cost of getting to London, then taking the bus to Amsterdam.
By Eurostar
You can actually take the Eurostar all the way to Amsterdam, St Pancras to Amsterdam Centraal. Different sources suggest different exact times it will take, but around 5 hours is the general opinion. Occasionally you get these tickets as cheap as £55-75, but it’s usually more like £100-50 for a one way trip. Of course you’d have to factor in the costs of getting to London, but if you already live nearby this might be the best option for you. If you’d like more info, you can read our guide to taking the Eurostar.
By Ferry
You could also take the ferry to Amsterdam, although it takes around 7-16 hours. The cheapest I found for the same date as the other Amsterdam searches was one way Newcastle to Amsterdam for £88. However, this price didn’t seem to be typical, most were around £175-200.

What are the cheapest ways to get to Chicago?
By Airplane
Unless you’re planning to spend weeks on a boat you can really only fly to the US, but how can we make this cheaper? Well, direct flights often cost more than flights with stops. If you were to choose a flight with 2 or more stops (especially one with an airport change in New York) you can get that price down to around £260 for a one way trip. Changing airlines with the stops seems to help as well, especially if you change to Spirit Airlines (one of the US’s cheapest airlines) in New York.
What are the cheapest ways to get to Dublin?
By Airplane
Most of the time the cheapest way to get to Dublin from the UK is by flying there. A few exceptions might be if you get a very good deal on a ferry, or if you already live in Holyhead. Holyhead, Wales is where the ferry for Island makes port, so if you’re already there you can cut out the travel costs of getting there, which could be significant if you are coming from somewhere many hours away.
By RailSail Deal
The next cheapest way to get to Dublin from the UK is by getting a RailSail deal. This is a combined booking for trains to Holyhead, Wales (or from Dublin to elsewhere in Ireland) and your ferry tickets. Bought together like this often means a better deal.
