What ChatGPT 4o and the End of Search Mean for You

In this issue:

  • Too much AI news
  • ChatGPT Mac app
  • Has generative AI already peaked?
  • Harpa.ai breakdown

It has been a week for AI. There are so many great recaps floating out there on OpenAI's and Google's AI announcements from this past week. Many jobs will be impacted, but now, let's focus on how these announcements impact designers and marketers.

First up, Open AI introduced ChatGPT 4o. This new model brings GPT4 capabilities to users on the free plan. If you're not a paid subscriber, this will give you the opportunity to play around with ChatGPT and Dall-E 3 (up to 10 prompts per 24 hours).

The ChatGPT app also has vision built into it. This means that you can use the app on your phone, show ChatGPT an image, and it can understand what is on the image. The demo only showed it recognizing letters and numbers, but this example video from Reem Rassam shows ChatGPT having a conversation based on what it is seeing through the phone's camera. ??

Just imagine drawing a quick sketch, and then having Dall-E create a full version right from your phone. ChatGPT can now see, interpret, and react to what it sees. Some systems already do parts of this, but we're moving closer to all-in-one generative AI services for imagery.

What does this mean for you? Well, if you own or design websites, it means that organic traffic will drop significantly. Being discovered is getting harder. Branded searches, though, will still drive traffic to your site.

This means most of the traffic coming to your site is already aware of you and/or your offerings. You can reorganize your website to focus more on how and why you solve problems. It also means you have to find new ways to build your brand outside of search.

Some other wrap-ups of the event:

OpenAI also announced its Mac desktop app for ChatGPT. It's handy, but I can't use it for everything. I couldn't figure out how to get the Dall-E image out of the app, so I had to go back to the web browser to download it. I'm sure this is just a first-gen bug.

NEW RESOURCES FOR YOU

Harpa AI

By incorporating ChatGPT, Google Gemini, and Claude AI into your browser, it can

  • It summarizes web pages and videos
  • Article writing and content repurposing
  • Text translation and grammar correction
  • SEO analysis and keyword extraction
  • Monitoring prices and website data
  • Generating prompts for Midjourney and other AI image generators
  • Coding and more

The best part is automating any of these with workflows.

This is the beginning of the real future of AI: agents. Allowing AI to take actions on your behalf automatically.

Overall, I'm impressed with what Harpa can do. $25 a month is a little steep since I'm already paying $20/mo for ChatGPT. I'll let my subscription expire at the end of this month, but I may reactivate it later on.

If you have used Harpa or explored it, please let me know what you think.

At my core, I am a teacher. I'm great at the middle of conversations. I'm not as athletic as I remember being.

I don't think people are realizing the implications of this yet, Jim. "If the AI results at the top of the search results give me the answer I was looking for, why would I scroll down?" That doesn't just impact SEO, that impacts paid search too! The bigger question for me is: What can I do to position my solution *in* those GAI answers?

This is massive news Jim MacLeod as this kills Hubspot’s inbound marketing model, which a lot of modern marketing is based on. Also shared this on X.
