What is Chat GPT and Generative AI?

Have you watched the movie "Her"?

It's a wacky concept. The movie is set in a near-future Los Angeles. People have personal AI assistants that can understand and respond to their every intimate need. The protagonist, Theodore (Joaquin Phoenix), falls in love with his AI assistant, Samantha (Scarlett Johansson). The film raises questions about love, connections, and the role of AI in our lives.

At the time of the movie's release, nobody over 45 had a smartphone. Assistants like Siri and Alexa just began entering the mainstream. And having a personal AI assistant that could comprehend and respond to our every need seemed like a far-off fantasy. However, the rise of generative AI and natural language processing has made this fantasy a reality in the years since the movie's release.

So, what is generative AI?

It is a type of artificial intelligence that can generate text indistinguishable from human writing, which has far-reaching implications for all industries. Chat GPT, in particular, is a brand of artificial intelligence under the generative AI umbrella that can conduct conversations with humans naturally and engagingly, much like Theodore's conversations with Samantha in "Her."

In retrospect, one of the most interesting things about "Her" is how it explored emotional connections with AI, which we are only beginning to comprehend in 2023. In the movie, Theodore falls in love with Samantha because she understands him as no one else can. They can learn and grow together. Similarly, Chat GPT can connect users in a way impossible before. As it learns from conversations, it becomes more personalized, creating a sense of intimacy and emotional connection.

Generative AI also raises questions about the role of technology in our lives and how it will change our relationship with work. As AI becomes more advanced, it may replace many jobs and industries. It could have important economic and social consequences, like how we get paid for work. Additionally, the emotional connections we form with AI could change how we relate to our colleagues and ourselves. Long story short, it will get messy before we find a healthy relationship with generative AI.

So, here's how this all relates to you.

As AI develops, we must consider the ethical and social implications on work and human resources. Awareness and involvement with these technological advancements will help us decide how we want AI to shape our future. That's your job.

You must stay ahead of the curve and improve your organization's HR initiatives by doing something I did in 2004: jumping on the social media bandwagon and opening accounts.

Today, it's all about generative AI. If you don't start exploring now, you'll fall behind. We need you to pay attention! Open your Chat GPT account today!

And if you want to see generative AI in action, watch the movie "Her." It's an excellent example of how people should and shouldn't interact with AI to learn about themselves and the world around them.

Laurie this is such a pertinent topic especially within HR. Hype-y words are so over-used when it comes to new tech, and in this occasion I believe they are well-justified. One of the core skills that we all need to learn - within or outside HR - is how to work effectively and ethically with AI, in ways that can potentially 10X our productivity and even reduce the levels of bias that we encounter in the workplace. Generative AI changes everything, and we're going to see a tsunami of change within the HR space this year alone.

Will be interesting if not fascinating where AI takes us. Many challenging decisions and questions. My concern is that the continuing advance of the digital world takes us further and further away from what is important- people and human relationships. Thanks Laurie

I so passionately agree with this, Laurie! And as you say, we (HR) _must_ be part of shaping the future and discuss the ethical implications around this. I've written several articles about this, but I think we must discuss this over and over and over again. Great piece, thanks!

Nice write up Laurie and well balanced - so much of this conversation turns to either I love it or hate it, versus we need to learn about it and understand how to use it.
