What caused the Panama Papers leak?

There have been all sorts of theories flying about in recent days about the data leak at Mossack Fonseca, the lawyers at the centre of the Panama Papers scandal. The nub of the matter seems to be a combination of out of date website software, poorly designed architecture and the lack of a good firewall.

Their website was a combination of WordPress, Drupal and bespoke coding, and it looks like there were loopholes in every bit of it, all because they didn't keep up to date with the latest versions.  Add this to the combo of bad system architecture (emails, data and the client login portal all on the same servers), poor server-level security, and you have a disaster waiting to happen.

So the moral of the tale: if you store sensitive data, get your security reviewed and keep your software up to date!  And if that software is WordPress, give me a call on 07762 140 433 and I'll review it for you.
