What if career success didn't have to cost so much? ????

What's your career costing you right now?

Most people list personal time, quality of life, work/life balance, stress, mental and physical well-being, and even burnout.

It seems like a heavy price to pay.

No wonder most people don't reach their full career potential. Considering how much most of us are already paying, the cost for greater success would be far too high.

But what if it didn't have to be that way?

What if you could achieve greater success by doing less?

My clients are all high achievers who care deeply, like to solve problems, and love to help others. They've achieved success through their hard work. Each step in their career path has required them to do more, and they've risen to the challenge each time.?They expect themselves to handle an ever-increasing workload and don't consider themselves ready for more career success until they can do even more. They have very high expectations for themselves and deal with a lot of self-imposed pressure. Does that sound like you?

Not only is this a fail-proof recipe for burnout, but high achievers also often get passed over for promotion because they confuse high performance with promotion potential.

And if they are recommended for promotion, they may pass on it because they don't think they have what it takes to handle what the new position will require if them.

One exercise I like to explore with my clients is this question: How could you do the least?

I find it works because it flips in the way high achievers think, and it gets us to a series of questions to pinpoint how they can use their strengths to create the most impact while also finding the time that will allow them to focus on those things.

And that's a cost-saving recipe for greater career success with less stress.

After exploring this exercise with one of my clients, we discovered that he could delegate quite a bit to his second-in-command, and that would have the added benefit of giving his delegate valuable experience that would prepare them for their next promotion. Talk about a win-win.

But my client hesitated to follow through. Being already so stressed himself, he didn't want to burden anyone else with a greater workload.

I asked him how he knew what his second-in-command's workload was, and he told me he didn't know for sure. He committed to having that conversation. It turned out that his second-in-command could easily handle the workload and was excited to take it on.

Talk about cost cutting!

Of course, it's not always that easy. Then again, I have similar stories from a few other clients, so maybe it could be.
