What can/are you doing to make your business almost impossible to leave?
Tired of investing in raw talent to see them leave after what feels like 10 minutes, long before you’ve got your pay back, for what we all know is a ridiculous basic salary in the full knowledge they will fail to justify the sizeable raise and that the new boss is making an absolute shocker of a decision?
C’EST LA VIE!
I suffered it loads at Computer Futures and SThree (because people wanted to know what made us so special), resulting in us getting serious about it - here are some of the learns and ideas you might like to consider and adopt!
1. PEOPLE DON’T LEAVE COMPANIES THEY LEAVE PEOPLE
A great leader (even a relatively fresh one), can have a massive impact on churn. In fact, they should be rewarded for reducing it!?
If we agree over the lifetime value of a Euro recruiter (in whatever guise) …
So, keeping hold of Talent is important & worth incentivising.??The Billing Manager got paid on each person in their team plus a bonus for minimal candidate driven exits!??We as a management group were extremely hot on the performance drivers per team/P&L so the BM knew if the staff members weren’t doing well they would be on a PIP instantly = we were not carrying dead wood!
It was the BM’s job to lead, inspire, educate, coach, support to the max max max NOT SIT BACK AND ENJOY THE VIEW & KUDOS!
This level of love was hard to match.??Our staff loved of BM’s, the Directors were really hands on helping with client facing opportunities, BD was there to help expand client relationships and the CEO - well I was fun and sold the dream daily!
We were a very sticky business and the volume of 3 year plus people was part of our success!
2. CREATE A BRILLIANT ENVINONEMNT WHERE PEOPLE CAN MAKE SERIOUS MONEY, IN A TRUE MERITORACY, WITH UNLIMITED OPTIONS & OPPORTUNITIES
Create an environment and culture where people feel they can approach and ask for anything at any time!
Create a formula for doing business and encourage (reward) those who help improve it - I gave people up to £1k from my own account if an idea was ace and it was in the business across the globe within 24hours!??You will need constant input as you’re too far removed from the coal face to really know the pain points.

If people want to progress faster or earn more get them to reason it and make a plan, never push them back and say later. For them this is the most important thing and they have come to you before looking for another job! That is golden and all credit to your style, environment, and culture.
Avoid glass ceilings or the ‘dead men’s shoes’ approach to promoting people - everything is possible, everyone is important and it’s your brilliant problem to solve not a headache (or a pain in the arse employee!)
A great culture, a dream team of like-minded and inspiring colleagues and an open and inclusive environment with fair and equitable pay is hard to leave even for a big increase.?
(The data scientist at Glassdoor once told Dean & I at a lunch that it takes a min of 40% salary uplift to move a passive workers dial just 1%!)
3. REPEAT THE POSITIVE MESSAGES EVERY DAY = MAKE PEOPLE REALLY QUESTION WHETHER IT’S RIGHT TO LEAVE ND WILL THEY BE REMOETELY AS SUCCESSFUL OR FIT IN SO WELL ELSSWHERE?
Don’t mollycoddle but make sure they believe that the place they will be the best, is with you.
It is worth noting all that you give to your people repeatedly ie)
People need to have a list they show prospective suitors – yours should put a stop to things pretty fast!
It becomes a mantra
People start saying it even when you aren’t there?
It’s brilliant?
