What can you do when you get upset at work?

At the start of 2023 I worked with ?? Dr Gyles Morrison MBBS MSc and Vanetta Morrison MACC MBACP to design an 'Emotional First Aid Kit’ for when people get upset at work.

Our premise was threefold:

  1. Everyone can get upset at work sometimes
  2. For some people, getting upset at work happens more often than they would like
  3. For some people, getting upset at work really stops them feeling safe and being able to do their work.

Our aim was to equip people to build skills to find the emotional balance they needed to make decisions about their own wellbeing and to function comfortably.

The Emotional First Aid Kit is comprised of information and exercises derived from:

  • The SCARF model of social needs and threats
  • Trauma informed emotional regulation practices
  • Trauma informed psychotherapy, including the 'Window of Tolerance' understanding of emotional dysregulation.

In 2023 we ran a study with 9 participants from 6 different countries to understand how the WEFAK worked...or didn't work.

Since 2023 we have been 'sitting' with our learnings and have decided to make the Google Doc prototype publicly available later this year. Watch this space for a Creative Commons licensed Emotional First Aid Kit you can use at work...(or anywhere else to be honest!)
