What can you do to make work safer?
Today is World Day for Safety and Health at Work and Workers’ Memorial Day - an international day of significance.
Since 1996 Workers’ Memorial Day has been organised worldwide by the trade union movement to honour the memory of victims of occupational accidents and diseases. And raise worldwide awareness of occupational accidents and diseases.
Since 2003, the International Labour Organization (ILO) has observed World Day on Safety and Health at Work, to promote the prevention of occupational accidents and diseases globally. Here, in Australia on this day we remember those that have lost their life due to a work-related injury or illness.
It’s also a day to think about how our actions can prevent future deaths, injuries and illnesses.
The number of people killed at work is dropping, though sadly, in 2015, 193 workers lost their lives at work.
This year, 41 people have already lost their life at work. That is 41 families, workplaces and communities affected. One life lost, is one too many.
All of us can think about how our actions can help prevent workplace incidents and help ensure our workplaces and our people are safe and healthy.
In February this year I was appointed as Chairman of Safe Work Australia – a government body to support the development of policy, to improve work health and safety, to support the conversations across the community on how we can improve the safety of our workforce.
I am honoured to have this role and to play a part in this important work to reduce the incidence of work-related fatalities and injuries among Australia’s workers.

8 年Excelente comentario. 8 年OHS is one of those things where actions speak louder than words. Authentic and passionate engagement by senior management is necessary to bring the cultural change that is required. That engagement has to be meaningfull and relevant to the people that are being engaged. I have seen management just give lip service to this just to achieve company KPIs. The message I try to give my people is that everybody has a part to play, not just those on the frontline.

8 年Good post Diane Smith-Gander. In my view, creating an effective whistle-blowing system is probably the most important aspect of managing long term workplace safety. In most cases of serious accidents including absolute disasters like the Dec 1984 Union Carbide Bhopal disaster which wiped out almost an entire city, serious inadequacies were well known to staff on the ground long before the actual disaster. They were discouraged by their immediate managers from escalating them all the way up to the board.
