What can we make out of this?
Legacy assets feel like a comfy old couch – familiar and seemingly irreplaceable. But just like that couch, they can start to sag and show their age, making it tough for companies to keep up with their industry. Which is quite a shame, because theres so much to be gained by just letting go of the status quo and moving on ?
I've spent the past three weeks offline, out in the real world, doing real-world things
Namely, moving ?? ??
I had already moved 13 times across 4 countries. But this 14th time was more challenging than any that came before, even though we were just moving to the other part of town.
And that's because we decided not to rent a storage unit.
Daiana F. & I knew we wouldn't revisit that stuff for years to come, and we'd end up paying more in rent than the value of the stuff itself.
A tough decision was needed
So we steeled our hearts and took an assets-vs-needs approach: whatever wasn't needed in the new location had to go.
Stuff got sorted into "buckets". The for sale pile. The give-away pile. The recycle pile. Whatever didn't sell was offered to the Red Cross or to our friends. Whatever was too old to use anymore was just discarded responsibly.

This. Took. Time.
It would have been so much faster to dump everything inside a storage unit. Faster still to not even move in the first place, right?
Yet here we are, having made a clean break, feeling light-hearted and ready for what comes next. Letting go of so much stuff left enough room (literally) to bring in something new, something that's useful to us now.

Companies go through this as well.
One of the most likely assets to get worn-in and deprecated are marketing websites. It's so hard to let go because they've gotten to know all the work-arounds and the slow-yet-familiar workflows. And it takes time to review legacy content, sort the evergreen from the ever-old and decide what will be useful on their new platform.
But once they're there, they get to breathe in the fresh air and let their minds wander...
