What can we learn from a Rocket Scientist about Alignment?

As a former NASA rocket scientist, I appreciate the analogy of the P5 rocket and the theory that systems and processes must align with your people for optimal functionality. The five Ps of Ryan’s rocket theory are: Purpose, Product, Performance People, and Processes.

-Dr. John E. Knight, former Rocket Scientist, NASA

I’ve been having a fascinating discussion with Dr. John E. Knight, former Rocket Scientist for NASA, on the parallels between a successful NASA mission and success in business!

The good news is you don’t have to actually BE a rocket scientist to excel in business. But you do need to THINK like one!

There is a lot of information to share with you on the similarities between real-live rocket launches and success in business that I have gleaned from my interviews with Dr. Knight, but first I want to introduce you to the first installment of Think Like a Rocket Scientist, which will be a six-part series coming to your inbox via this newsletter!

Think Like a Rocket Scientist Part One: OPTIC(S)? is your Mission Control

Ryan’s five Ps illustrate why OPTIC(S)? is such a relevant system to apply whether you are working on space exploration with NASA, launching a startup, or seeking to improve your business operations.”

-Dr. John E. Knight

NASA wouldn’t think of launching a rocket without carefully reviewed systems, safeguards, meticulously honed checklists, and highly skilled people, and neither should you!

We’ve been talking a lot about the alignment your business needs to move forward and grow. You may be asking: “How? I get that I need to get things in order, but where do I even start?” If you are like many other business owners, you’ve been limping by on unintegrated software, outdated processes, and poor-quality data. You have suboptimized resources and little coordination among departments.

If this sounds familiar, you are in the right place! I am excited to introduce you to the OPTIC(S)TM framework which I have been successfully implementing across a wide variety of sectors in businesses both large and small. This unique system is your answer! Implementing OPTIC(S)TM provides you with the structure you need to bring in the clarity, simplicity, and alignment that are so critical to the successful launch of your next mission, or for course correction in the journey you are already on.

OPTIC(S)TM is the business version of Mission Control at NASA and is your go-to system of data-gathering, metrics evaluation, process implementation, and communication within your teams. It gives you a roadmap of where you have been, and where you are going. The OPTIC(S)TM system can help you retain industry knowledge when team members leave, onboard new employees into existing processes, and simplify and maximize your production and output. It’s a versatile template that looks at all aspects of your business and pulls the entire organization together into one tidy knot.

I’ve used OPTIC(S)TM to improve work-life balance for employees, increase efficiency, identify true pain points, and execute solutions for a wide range of businesses. This is how you get your processes documented, communicated, and followed by all!

OPTIC(S)? puts you back in control of your company and provides you with the quality data and processes that form the basis for sound decisions!

Where would NASA be without Mission Control?

Well, they’d probably be in press conferences doing damage control. Lives would be lost and resources would be wasted.

Where will your business be without a guiding framework to clarify, simplify, and align your people and processes?

Very likely, it will be a statistic in some historical database of business failures.

OPTIC(S)? is the framework you need to fine-tune your rocket and accelerate your performance.

Think like a rocket scientist: Spend time perfecting Mission Control!

You don’t need to be a rocket scientist to use OPTIC(S)?, and it won’t take you to the moon. However, when you implement this system, you can determine the direction and propulsion you need to get your business where you want it to go.
