What can we learn from MINDSET of Elite Athletes

What can we learn from MINDSET of Elite Athletes

You may not realise it but you and the professional sportsperson have more in common than you think

Professional athletes are successful due to natural ability and hard work but even the most elite turn to coaches to ensure they continue to perform their best. Should you?

Most people spend decades acquiring, knowledge, technical skills or even normal day to day skills to perform the most basic of tasks and refining these under the supervision of more experienced colleagues, peers’ parents and teachers. Though what happens after completing this formal or informal training (gathering of knowledge) is far less rigorous. Since traditional teaching is based on a presumption that after a certain point the student no longer needs instruction, people are responsible for maintaining and improving their own skills for most of their careers. Despite this, current strategies for professional development are suboptimal and without the opportunity for long term learning from other talented colleagues, most of us risk plateauing as our careers/lives progress.

Coaching is one promising approach to tackle this. Through my journey of living multiple mental illnesses, recovery from alcoholism, drug addiction and attempted suicide to developing the Discovering The best you "Mind Your Health" program I have identified coaching and mentoring as “essential to supporting and developing good practice” in life, work and sport. I had coach who helped me identify my own needs and encouraged me to develop my skills and broaden my mindset, so it can only make sense that this same approach would apply to all facets of life.

You might want to be the best Mum or Dad; you may own a business and want to be a better boss. You may even be a coach and want to expand your knowledge. It doesn't matter who or what you are having coach or mentor is the key to resetting your mindset from I can’t to "I can, and I will". Mindset Is Everything. Burn that statement into your brain. Mindset should be considered the intangible X-factor that can strongly determine your competitive success or failure.

The reality you perceive is always the product of your mindset.

Your mindset is but a true reflection of who you are as a person.

Achieve something significant or fulfilling a dream is surely challenging. But it is not always impossible. If you want to make things happen, know that your action always matters. But before action, you need to adopt a mindset. It is everything — that fuel that will keep you going despite the odds and test.

If you want to be mentally tough, you need to take cues from athletes. Their magnificent physique is not just a product of their workouts but also of their mindset. While you are not going to join the Olympics or take part in a bodybuilding contest, you can always benefit from an athletic mindset. Below are some of the things that you may want to instill into your mind, whether it is in the context of sport or life in general.

Athletes are clear with their goals

Athletes do not just work out or practice for nothing. They have goals, and you should have too. They do not just work out to lose weight or get fit (though these could be goals, too!). They are doing it to compete with their rivals, become a Grand Slam winner, or be the best in their field. When you have goals and you want to achieve something eventually, you will realize that your efforts, hardships, and sacrifices are not in vain. They will culminate in something meaningful.

They love what they are doing

Most athletes love what they are doing. This is the life that they know, and they are sure that they will be doing it again and again. With this mindset, the hardships and sacrifices they make feel less of burden, and they even get to enjoy it. When you apply this mindset to your life, you will realize that turning something into a habit will be much easier.

You don't have to be in trouble or be unwell to seek a higher performance

Detailed monitoring of performance allows a coach to give constructive feedback, facilitate self-reflection, guide action planning, and support implementation and self-evaluation of changes in practice, which plays an integral part in the success of athletes. Evidence to support the effectiveness of coaching is in its early stages but is growing quickly, with studies showing that it enhances learning and results in better skill acquisition than conventional training f across a range of contexts

We have a coaching program that has great potential to become a standard component of your daily practice, but you've got to recognise that your life can be better by just doing the basics consistently.

If mindset is the key, then routine is the doorway

We all know that creating a daily routine is essential, but getting to implement it is the hard part. If you look into most successful peoples’ lives, you will realize that they follow a fixed schedule, which has helped them to build productivity habits over time.

Creating a system that works and following it every day is an excellent way of becoming your best self. A successful routine gives you a laser-like focus from the second you get up to the time you go to sleep. Read on for tips on how to establish a daily routine.

We are what we repeatedly do. Excellence then is not an act, but a habit. — Aristotle

Make a list of your daily tasks

The first step is to look into what you need to do every day. Do not worry about organizing the list at this point. Simply focus on jotting down the list. If you cannot remember everything, carry your notebook every day for a week, and write down all the tasks you do.

Include the tasks that work well for you and those that you should add in your routine. While at it, these questions will help to refresh your memory.

·        What things should you do before going to work?

·        Which tasks should you do to get your children to school?

·        What errands should you run daily?

·        What should you do to exercise?

·        What tasks should you do to have healthy meals?

·        What should you do to maintain an organized house?

Make a list, and remember that no task is too small. It is okay to include simple things like brushing your teeth.

Develop a schedule

Assess your energy levels. What time of the day do you perform tasks best? Most people have high energy levels in the morning. As such, you should schedule the activities that require the most work at this time.

What your morning should look like

Waking up marks the start of the day, and your attitude determines how the rest of the day will be. Even if you are not a morning person, you should find a way of enjoying the first hours of your day.

Try waking up after the first alarm. Setting several alarms is a way of communicating to the universe that you are not looking forward to the day, and you would like to put it off for later. When you wake up passionately and with excitement about the opportunities that the day offers, you will be off to a great start.

Some tasks must be completed in the morning, such as taking your kids to school and preparing for work. Once you are done carrying out the routine duties, you can move to activities that require high levels of critical thinking and troubleshooting. For instance, if you are an accountant, reserve the mornings for your bookkeeping tasks.

Stay active during the day

At this time, your energy levels have dissipated. So, you can do the boring, routine things. Use your midday hours for tasks like answering emails, organizing upcoming activities, setting appointments, and running errands.

Take breaks during work, preferably after every hour. Whether you are freelancing or working from an office, taking regular breaks will help to improve your concentration and boost your mental health.

Have an evening ritual

In the evening, you should put an end to your income earning activities and focus on yourself and your family. You should get your mind away from the stress and responsibilities of the day.

Evenings are best left for planning and preparing for the next day. Use this time to do things like packing lunches, de-cluttering the house, laying out clothes, and cooking.

Here are other things you can include in your evening schedule:

·        Have a chat with your family or friends

·        If you are consistently low on energy and fatigued, you should consider taking vitamins and supplements for energy before going to bed

·        Meditate on how you spent the day

·        Think about how you can make the next day better than today

·        Read a book in bed to catch sleep naturally

Remain flexible

Your routine and expectations might not fit in nearly as perfect as you expected, and that is okay. The point is to make use of your productive times for the challenging tasks and your less productive times for the less challenging activities. Very many successful people sleep all day and work at night. If this describes you, don’t be scared to do you!

Test-drive your new routine

Once everything is all set up, it’s time to practice the routine. Write it on a paper and test-drive it for 30 days. Take note of your feelings. Did you schedule the tasks in a way that doesn’t make sense? Do you feel that adjusting some aspects would make more sense? If yes, do not shy away from making changes. In the end, you should have a routine that works best for you.

Be realistic

Having a routine and sticking to it is incredible, but you should give yourself time. Productive habits take time to develop. If you are too hard on yourself, you might never have the chance of enjoying the benefits of a routine. Your success depends on how seriously you take your routine. The benefits outweigh the willpower you invest at every step, so it is worthwhile.

Over to you!

Do you have a daily routine? If you do, what does it include? Are you maximizing your potential and hours?
