What can we learn from Googles "Alpha" "Bets"

Google does some… strange things. However, the company’s announcement on Monday that it will essentially be renaming itself “Alphabet” might be the weirdest one yet. There will still be a Google, of course, it’s just that Google will be only one company under the main Alphabet umbrella.

Why choose the name Alphabeat though, personally I thought it was a bit odd, with no real context or relation to Google, that was until my colleague explained  that Alpha-Bet is effectively code for alpha meaning return on investment above the benchmark and Bet is what Google does or as it says itself  “Google is not a conventional company. We do not intend to become one.” As part of that, we also said that you could expect us to make “smaller bets in areas that might seem very speculative or even strange when compared to our current businesses.” And we all know how successful these bets have been for Google.

This got me thinking, how could we apply what Google do to our career decisions?
