What can we do to help us feel successful in these difficult times

We are in these almost unbelievable times and many of us are starting to question what do we need to do to feel, remain or find a way to be successful. Success is a matter of perspective and is anchored in our personal beliefs about how we see ourselves and how we live our values using the skillsets we have or the new ones we are prepared to learn.

For all of us success can be measured in many ways and success means different things to different people. For many people success will be broader than it had been pre the health crisis. Many of us are looking for a sense of balance as we go towards the new normal with our newly reset priorities and ambitions of keeping work, home, play and personal time in equilibrium.

I wanted to share what I think are some attitudes and practices we could all apply in our lives to help ourselves achieve our desired successes. It is important to know what your purpose is, as this is typically your north star and it will help you remain positive and to navigate the bumps on the road when things appear to become tough.

Here are some of the things I believe we can do to be successful in this new normal

?Passion

In my mind passion is the number one attitude we all need to have to begin the journey towards success. Passion gives you the ability to take action and get up in the morning with a bounce in your step. Passion is energy positive which is vital to keeping you motivated through any real difficulties and the challenges you may face. Spend some time working out what your passion is and use this as the start line.

Strategically Intentional and agile

We should try and be strategic and intentional with our lives and identify the actions we need to take to achieve the successes we want to see. It is important to be agile as the health crisis has taught us the path we set out on may be changed by unforeseen circumstances and events that our not in our control. Being strategically intentional with agility will ensure we find a new path to towards the successes we want to achieve no matter what comes our way.

Beliefs

Know your belief system and redefine your beliefs if they are limiting your success in any way. Remember beliefs are only true if you believe in them. Can you recall when you were a child? You may of believed that tooth fairies existed and now as an adult we know they do not exist, to my knowledge In most cases people have managed to accept fairies don’t exist without any life lasting emotional scars. We can do the same with any of our other beliefs that prevent us from achieving success. Make your beliefs real and positive.

Connect to people with the same values and collaborate

Many of us in this lock down period have discovered Zoom, MS Teams and have come to learn and understand the true colours of people both positively and negatively. What I have learnt the most is to value people and connect with people who have the same life values as I do. I think it is important to define and work out your value system and look to connect with people who have similar values and collaborate with them to achieve mutual success.

Energy

Tom rath wrote a great book called ” how full is your bucket “. Its a must read to discover how to keep your personal energy full. People are either extroverted or? introverted and how we obtain energy is different. Know how to keep your energy topped up. Your energy needs to be in abundance to keep you on the journey to success. Don't allow people to drain your energy and work on the basis of operating a bank account. When you give your energy out and receive energy back make sure you never get in to negative equity. Take time out to re charge if needs be. Be energy positive.

Communication

Communication is both verbal and non verbal and in fact verbal communication is only 7 percent words the other 93 percent left is body language, expressions, tonality and eyes and so on. You can imagine with most people using Zoom and Ms Teams it is easy to lose some of the the non verbal communication leaving the wrong impression.

Choose your vocabulary carefully when you speak to people online and of course with your inner self. The biggest risk to success is how you communicate to yourself. Keep those negative thoughts at bay and find strategies to block out your negative mind. When using Zoom and MS teams try to over emphasise your tonality, energy and watch those facial expressions. Many times I have watched myself on play back and realised I did not come across as I had wanted too.

Network and connection

Keep building your personal network and connections this is really important. Networking brings about opportunities you would not ordinarily hear about or know of. Its a great way to put your finger on the pulse of your chosen industry where you can learn and meet new people. If are introverted like myself pre plan and focus on connecting to one or two people to start with. The key to networking is great questioning and listening to people more than talking. ? Remember networking is about building relationships and not treating people as a potential transaction.

Find a mentor

One thing that has come out from the health crisis situation is that people want to help others. I have never seen so much sharing and helping of others. There are some really incredible and amazing people who have achieved much success. They are equally happy to share their experiences and be supportive to people like you and I.

We can all be mentors too as we all have good things to share that can help other people learn and become a better version of themselves.

The benefits for a mentee can be assistance with problem solving, supporting the reflection process, creates a support mechanism, provides encouragement and impartial advice when people most need it.

For mentors it can provide the opportunity for you to practice your interpersonal skills, widen your understanding of existing challenges people face, provide personal satisfaction and promote self worth plus the opportunity to reflect on your previous experiences and to help you learn how you would of done things differently with the insights you now have. Choose your mentor carefully and be disciplined to meet online or in person subject to lockdown rules.

Of course there are many more things we can try to bring success to ourselves these for me are the ones I find are helpful to me. I would love to hear how you bring success to your life and to read some good news stories on how you have achieved success.

Thank you for reading my article I am grateful and appreciative

Very well written Mr Butler and so VERY apt for this forum, can't agree more, would also add knowing our 'Purpose' as our panel chat and finding either a new or old good 'friend' our professional approach and attitude is hugely important but I also think in such times having good 'friend/s' (near or far) is important for us all, and I'm VERY happy I have managed to achieve this, moral support is something we may think we don't need, but we all do. Again we are ALL in the same place, its difficult for some many of us and I'm still very inspired that you had the initiative to create and continue this amazing support forum, as I'm sure many others are too
