Today attended a panel discussion on "Shrimp Consumption Promotion—the Way Forward," with Allan Cooper , David Costa, CEO, Manta Bay Seafood, Linda Lai Cornish, MBA and Arnd Jan Gulmans and moderated by Melanie Siggs (which by the way did a stellar job taking us through the agenda). Allan Cooper drew a fascinating parallel between the avocado and shrimp industries, shedding light on how the avocado industry's marketing model could set an example for future unified shrimp marketing initiatives. ??
In recent years, the shrimp industry has faced challenges, including fluctuating prices due to increased production. While the industry has made significant strides in enhancing production efficiency, there's an essential piece of the puzzle that cannot be ignored: Demand. How do we ensure that the growth in shrimp production is met with a corresponding increase in demand?
This is where the avocado story becomes relevant. Just a few years ago, the avocado industry in the US was grappling with a similar question. However, they managed to not only increase supply but also drive up prices by focusing on one critical factor: CONSUMPTION. They brought new consumers into the fold, turning avocado enthusiasts into "heavy users," and creating an avocado craze that's sweeping the nation. ????
How did they do it? The avocado industry adopted a two-pronged approach: Data Collection and a Unified Approach to Marketing and Research. Through comprehensive data analysis and extensive research, avocados were established as a nutritious, heart-healthy fruit. They delved into consumer behavior, retail trends, and education, which helped shape efficient marketing strategies. A unified marketing approach ensured a consistent message was delivered to the market, capturing the hearts and taste buds of consumers. ????

Now, the avocado industry has "All-Avocado" restaurants, a National Guacamole day, and avocado toast that might soon surpass bagels in popularity. ????
So, what can the shrimp industry learn from this? It's clear that we need to bring a compelling story to the market and back it up with high-quality, sustainable shrimp. People crave stories, and they want to be part of something impactful. ????
The shrimp industry has an incredible story to tell. Companies and countries that focus on producing high-quality, sustainable shrimp have an opportunity to make a real impact. We just need to come together and shout it out! ?????
