What can grow fast enough?
Many argue that even if the cost of renewable electricity only half or one tenth of the costs of fossil power with CCS or nuclear power cost, there are other reasons that make the expensive technologies necessary.
One such argument is that only nuclear can grow fast enough. To support this argument examples of small countries like Sweden in the 1980s, or regions like Ontario around 2010, or even smaller regions serve as examples.
Choosing a small area and a large new plant any such extreme results can be achieved for any technology.
What is most relevant for the world however is the global growth. The diagram above shows how the annual change in electricity from nuclear on the one hand, and solar + wind on the other has evolved ven the last 70 years.
