Dear Corporate Citizen:
As you know, a national public health emergency has been declared by the White House. There is an Opioid addiction epidemic in America. The question is: what does this frightening development in society have to do with your corporation?
The answer is this: it is your wake-up call! It says to you as a corporate leader that the opioid addiction is so pervasive that you, too, are already dealing with this problem. Therefore, preventing opioid addiction among your employees should be top priority; it should be right there at the top of the list when addressing your work-place safety concerns because it has become an ever-present threat and danger to your employees. It deserves at least as much of a cautionary effort as “wet floors.”
Whether or not you choose to take steps to help combat this epidemic, your employee population will continue to increasingly be at great risk.
It has long been the stigma that drug addictions are found, fed, and fueled in the back alleyways, and underbelly of society, far beyond the motes of corporate America. However, this is far from the truth. The truth is, each of your employees is potentially only one pain prescription away from an opioid addiction. Employee who undergo routine dental work, or sustain minor injuries coaching a child’s sport team, could easily become victims of opioid addiction simply because the doctor prescribed pain killers to help them through the ordeal. Yes, an alarming number of opioid addictions happen right under a doctor’s care with the patient taking their prescription as directed. In the patient’s view, they are only “taking their medicine.” So, without proper knowledge of how to prevent an addiction, the number of addictions among your own employees will continue to increase.
As a corporate leader, how is it possible for you to address this threat, head on? There is only one way, and that “one way” is education. Employees must become educated about ways to prevent this addiction from happening to them. And believe it, or not, the corporations that educate their employees about the lurking dangers of opioid addiction will not only save lives and livelihoods among their employees (and by extension, their families), but also will avoid the potential overhead costs related to healthcare, absenteeism, loss of production, loss of product quality, and on-the-job accidents caused by lack of focus, employee turnover, etc. This is where we can help you.
