What can a dog raising its leg to piss can teach you about positioning?

What can a dog raising its leg to piss can teach you about positioning?

A dog raising its teeny weeny leg on a roadside wall is almost a common everyday sight.?

In fact, some dogs have a preference to pee on particular objects.?

It could be your neighbour’s new car, a well-maintained wall, or a tree that you consider holy! Lol.?

But can this seemingly simple, casual, rather familiar act of dog create a buzz?

Can a dog pee position make it to the headlines of top newspaper publications?

Can a dog raising its leg to take a leak make artists, common folks, and heck even neuroscientists talk about it?

Surprise!

That's what artist Banksy did with his rather usual yet novel graffiti…

Where he drew a dog raising his leg to piss on a fire hydrant.?

Oh, dear girl.

He did it, SO REMARKABLY well that he even got Andrew Huberman reminiscing about his bulldog Costello.?

You know how it was possible.?

It has to do with divergent thinking.??

There is nothing interesting about a dog raising his legs to piss.

There is nothing interesting about a fire hydrant.?

In fact, there is also nothing even interesting about combing two-dimensional art in a 3-dimensional space.??

It’s also done and dusted method by graffiti artists.?

But how did Banksy make the world talk about it??

The "unusual connection" and "the unusual context".?

The NOVELTY of a dog raising its leg to piss on a fire hydrant pops out giving us an aha moment.

Because our brain pairs visual relationships with different objects and encodes concepts and entire stories as symbols.?

When this happens, your dopamine and other neural circuits are awakened.

The result?

It gets your attention, making you come alive from your mental humdrum.

Remember, dopamine isn’t just a pleasure chemical. It MOVEs you to ACT.?

So you start talking and acting upon what you have seen.

Now circling back to the question?

What does it have to do with positioning??

You see, you’ve to be NOVEL and UNIQUE in your business.?

For instance, look at all the 6-figure, 7-figure, & 8-figure coaches and marketers...

Or, any business for that matter!

97.966666 of them use the same, bore-as-fcxk templated sales page to make sales.?

Even their offer…

Right from the price to the guarantee, everything would be almost the same.?

Now when you do that…

The first problem is you don’t get a neuro response.?

Your target market will yawn and sleep.?

And go back to doing what they do.

Next, you’ll eventually become a commodity.?

People will compare your orange to everything other oranges in the market.

Since they look, feel, and smell the same, your prospects will probably think it’s gonna TASTE the same.?

Even if you have laboured it with love(I mean the organic way without those sucky, toxic, chemicals) and your orange tastes more scrumptious than every other orange, your prospects wouldn't just GET it.

Because they see your orange as every other oranges in the market.

Got my point?

So that’s why you have to:

Do the UNUSUAL.

Be UNCONVENTIONAL.

Embrace the UNORDINARY.?

So you can make your business(excuse my lang) balls-hair-raising UNIQUE.?

Even if you sell the same product or service as every other competitor, you absolutely have to find your UNIQUE THANG to stand out.?

If you can’t command premium prices and keep getting prospects who leave you even though you're WAAAY better than everyone else in the market, all your business got is:

> A positioning problem.?

> A differentiation problem.?

> A thinking problem.?

The solution?

You need to ask the questions that nobody else asks and present your business in a way like no one else in the market.?

In other words, you need to engineer your USP.?

Gotcha?

P.S. So instead of yelling at your cute dog because your customers fcuking don’t see your greatness, THINK DIFFERENT and find your UNUSUAL THANG.?

P.P.S. Doing it alone can be hard as you’d usually NEVER see blindspots. DM me if you need help. I've the process dialled in to engineer your USP if you qualify.

Novel & uniqueness and at the same time paired with "divergent thinking" - that sounds like a combination I would like to learn more of. Thanks for sharing this, Mani!

Great insight, Mani Sadasivam! Someone finds the dog pissing to be clever - win! Someone finds it offensive - win! Those someones are paying attention to it, intrigued somehow by it, and are ingesting a message. I dig it - stand out or be gobbled up by the average!

It is certainly true Mani Sadasivam that many businesses may struggle not because of a lack of quality or value, but rather because of a positioning problem!

Cracking article Mani. Banksy makes those weird but powerful connections look as effortless as a dog raising...
