A Crack in Creation: Gene Editing and the Unthinkable Power to Control Evolution. Jennifer Doudna and Samuel H. Sternberg. 2017?

Fundamental scientific discoveries have always changed our lives. On one hand by broadening our perspective of the world, and?on the other hand by providing us with new tools and technologies. Think about the discovery of atoms and electrons, for instance, leading to new forms of energy, new technologies like lasers and the atomic bomb. Similarly, our understanding of genes and the emergence of a new gene editing technology, CRISPR, is revolutionizing our lives. It is giving us the capability to cure difficult diseases and at the same time it is challenging ethics, politics and global power dynamic. There is something special about a book written by an inventor, founder or first mover - it emits the joy of pure discovery. This is a must-read book for every one of us. Learn about the basic idea of gene editing, its capabilities and how it may impact our future.?

Kelly: More Than My Share of it All. Kelly Johnson. 1985

This is the autobiography of Clarence L. Johnson (1910-1990). Known as "Kelly”, he led the design and development of some of the most advanced aircraft in the world at Lockheed. This book covers a good span of American aviation along with Kelly’s approach toward fast-paced engineering of complex systems, managing teams and problem solving when clock is ticking. How to Prevent the Next Pandemic. Bill Gates. 2022

“A pandemic is the equivalent of a fire that starts in one building and within weeks is burning in every country in the world. So, to prevent pandemics, we need the equivalent of a global fire department.” Bill Gates calls it GERM: Global Epidemic Response and Mobilization team. The envisioned GERM will be managed by the World Health Organization. It can declare pandemic and collaborate with governments and the World Bank to raise money for a quick response. Each chapter of the book talks about the steps we need to take to become pandemic ready and eventually eliminate it as a threat to humanity. Interesting topics from detecting outbreaks to finding new treatments and closing gaps between rich and poor countries.?

Why Am I Taller? What Happens to an Astronaut's Body in Space.?Dave Williams & Elizabeth Howell. 2022

Space medicine 101. The body functions differently in space. By large due to absence of the earth gravity. Distribution of water, for instance, changes and there is a shift of a liter of fluid from legs to upper body. Hence, puffy face-bird leg and adverse effects on our vision. There are a host of other changes in the body that impact balance, orientation, food digestion, bone density, muscle mass, cardiovascular system and so on. Insightful chapters about complexities in teamwork while in space, task planning and walking in spacesuit, further complicated by boredom and psychological challenges. Every chapter of this book is exciting. Especially if you are a physician or an engineer.

The Trusted Advisor: 20th Anniversary Ed. David H. Maister, Robert Galford. 2021

“There was a time when clients trusted professionals automatically, based solely upon their honorable calling”.?Today we need to become a “trusted advisor”, somebody who can understand the breath of business issues and develop a deep personal relationship with the client. The book talks about the trust development stages and it further formulates a trust equation made of credibility, reliability, intimacy, and self-interest. This is a must-read book for professionals in the consulting industry or anyone in a client facing role.
