What is Bilberry?
European Bilberry is a deciduous shrub with small, ovate leaves and spherical rose-colored flowers with a hint of light green. It is native to Europe and is widely distributed in the wild, particularly in the Scandinavian Peninsula (Norway). This fruit has a history of over 100 years as a traditional edible fruit in Northern Europe and has gained significant attention as a promising small fruit tree variety in the world of fruits today.
Scientific name: Vaccinium myrtillus Linn.
Plant History:
Bilberry has been a traditional edible fruit in Northern Europe for over 100 years and has gained significant attention as a promising small fruit tree variety in the world of fruits today. During World War II, the British and French air forces designated lingonberry jam as a specialized food to improve bombing accuracy. Even today, lingonberry jam is still referred to as the "pilot's breakfast" by the British and French air forces. In Japan, lingonberries are highly regarded as the "berry for beautiful eyes" and are popular among young people and women.
Main Distribution:
It is native to Europe and North Africa, growing in moist areas. It is cultivated in Central and Eastern Europe through seed propagation. It thrives in acidic and infertile soil, often found in forests and barren lands covered with heather, mainly distributed in Europe, Russia, northern Asia, North America (the United States and Canada), and the Alps at an altitude of 1500-2000 meters. Northern Europe has a higher distribution, found under open pine forests or dry areas, with altitudes reaching up to 1700 meters. Finland has a reserve of 150,000 to 200,000 tons, with commercial harvest accounting for only 4%. Poland produces 26,000 tons annually, Germany produces approximately 400 tons per year, and about 2500 tons are imported annually from Scandinavia and other regions. There is also a certain amount of production in Slovenia.
Main Components:
Bilberry contains a wide variety and high content of flavonoids, including anthocyanins, flavanols, proanthocyanidins, and quercetin, which are the main active components of this plant genus. Among them, anthocyanins have been the subject of early research. About 30 different anthocyanins have been discovered, with 15 common ones. These pigments consist of five aglycones: anthocyanidin, delphinidin, malvidin, peonidin, and petunidin. There are three sugars: glucose, galactose, and arabinose. The main anthocyanins are composed of monosaccharides to trisaccharides formed by these five aglycones and three sugars.
Main Benefits and Effects:
Anthocyanins are a pure natural anti-aging nutritional supplement and have been proven to be the most effective antioxidants discovered by humans today. The antioxidant capacity of anthocyanins is 50 times higher than that of vitamin E and 200 times higher than that of vitamin C. Its bioavailability to the human body is 100%, and it can be detected in the bloodstream within 20 minutes after ingestion.
