WHAT IS THE BEST DIET FOR WEIGHT LOSS?

Following on from a recent post, I will attempt to answer this question as comprehensively as I can (I can hear you all laughing, short and sweet isn't my style.... ??)

But, in short, the answer to this question is ANY diet can reduce weight and improve health markers if a calorie deficit is created.

The challenge, however, is to achieve SUSTAINABLE weight loss and prevent weight gain.

This means that the most effective weight loss diet is the one that you can stick to - ADHERENCE IS THE SINGLE MOST IMPORTANT FACTOR.

Your perfect diet is the one that you can see yourself following beyond Wednesday....

Sherry Pagoto sums it up quite nicely:

"picking a diet should be like picking a spouse– not a one night stand. If you plan to be on your diet temporarily, your weight loss will be temporary."

Which diet would you choose to grow old and grey with?

Ultimately, the crux of any diet involves reducing energy intake (calories) and increasing energy output (activity/exercise). How you choose to do this totally depends on your lifestyle, personal preferences, economic status etc etc.

As Jack Kornfield said,

"There are many ways up the mountain but each must choose a practice that feels close to his own heart."

With that said, there are most definitely common themes to a 'healthy' diet - these are:

? lots of fruit and veg

? few processed foods

? limited added sugar

? lots of whole-grains.

But fundamentally it comes down to personality, habits, and behaviour. Instead of asking what diet is best, consider what would work best for YOU and how you can improve your adherence so you can avoid the fad diet bandwagon!!
