WHAT IS BEHIND YOUR FACE BRICKS?
‘Face Bricks’ and ‘Brick Veneer’ are terms that you have probably come across if you have been receiving tenders from different builders… but what do these terms actually mean?
FACE BRICKS
The ‘face’ of the brick is the side that is made to be seen. This is the side of the brick that you can see from the outside of the home. What makes this side different from the others is that it usually has the colour that you have selected painted onto it. If you have selected a brick that has the colour throughout instead of painted on the ‘face’, then the ‘face’ is the one with the smoothest side.
BRICK VENEER
The term ‘Brick Veneer’ means that the home is made of a timber frame with a covering of brick. The brick covering is laid on the edges of the home that meet the outside.
No bricks are used on the internal walls, rather the internal walls are covered in gyprock.
WHAT DOES THIS MEAN TO MY NEW HOME?
The main place that face bricks or brick veneer may affect your home is the look of the garage.
There are two options that your builder will have to fit out the garage of your new home:
- Gyprock the internal walls of the garage (just like walls on the inside of your home).
- Have a single skin of bricks with piers.
GYPROCK
Gyprocking the garage walls means that the garage is completely framed like the rest of the home. The internal side of the frames will have a gyprock cover. This type of finish is just like all the other internal walls of your new home.
BRICKS AND PIERS
If your builder has opted to not frame your garage, this means that they will instead line the garage with a single skin of bricks. The garage walls will be supported by engaged brick piers along the external wall/s to keep them sturdy. If you have chosen a brick with a painted face, then the inside of your garage sees the side of the brick that isn’t made to be seen.
Both options are suitable for garages but both have very different looks upon completion. It is important to double check these details with your builder. This way you can request any changes or alterations before it is too late.
