What the auto industry can teach you about AI safety

Today’s question: How can you instill a culture of safety around AI in your organization??

Companies developing AI apps and systems can learn a valuable lesson from the auto industry –?safety sells.?

Today, only 21% of Americans trust businesses to use AI responsibly, which means the vast majority have serious reservations regarding the technology. Flashback to the 1990s, when it became clear that car buyers valued safety as a buying criteria. Automakers started building and promoting anti-lock brakes, airbags, and more recently, lane departure warning systems and backup cameras. Today, auto safety is as integral to your car choice as gas mileage, performance, and price.

How can you apply this safety culture to your company in the era of AI??

Kathy Baxter , principal AI architect at Salesforce , spells out the critical elements of a safety culture for emerging AI technology.

What does AI transparency look like?

Whether you’re using AI to recommend products, develop drugs, or screen job applicants, you’re entrusting it with data without fully understanding how it makes decisions. How can you better understand the logic behind the AI black box, and do a better job of disclosing when — and how — AI is being used? The experts weigh in.

What our community is saying?

“These are really exciting times. We are already prioritizing task-specific AI. The interactivity of large language model (LLM) multimodality (a system that understands text, image and speech) and the storytelling capability that some creative professionals predict, along with the predictive power of existing machine learning, will be revolutionary. It’s living engagement.”

There's no denying that AI and related technologies are being innovated at lightening speed. But like many other disruptions, so to say, the adoption would probably happen more gradually. This is exactly why there is a safety first mindset when we talk about the application. Eventually, a more refined version of the technology would possibly start getting widely adopted. But because there is so much AI disruption happening, the mainstream adoption may happen at a faster chip compared to other technologies.

What we are looking right now, how maximum business going to embrace AI? I would ask creators, how can AI help in improving/assisting our education to kids so that each kid/student can be approaced as per his capabilites and potetial? That's how we can improve us....though it might be too ambitious.
