What NOT to Ask in an Interview as a Candidate
The Engage Partnership Recruitment
Building Partnerships that last. Experts in finding YOU your next Tech role! Your future starts here... ??
POV you've landed that all-important tech interview...
But did you know the questions YOU ask could make or break your chances? Let's explore what not to ask too early in the process...
First up - the salary question! While it's obviously important, leading with "How much does this role pay?" can send the wrong message. It suggests you're only interested in the money, not the role or company.
When is the right time? Usually, salary discussions happen naturally later in the process, often during the second interview or when the recruiter brings it up.
What about working from home?
These are all valid questions - but asking them straight away might suggest you're more focused on working less than contributing to the team.
Benefits and holiday allowance... Yes, they matter! But diving into "What benefits do you offer?" or "How many days holiday do I get?" too early can raise eyebrows.
Progression and promotion timelines?

These questions are important for your career - but save them for when you've shown what value you can bring first!
Training and development... While it's great to be eager to learn, asking about training budgets in your first interview might suggest you're not ready for the role.
So what SHOULD you ask early on?
Remember... The first interview is your chance to show what you can bring to the table. Focus on demonstrating your value before asking what's in it for you.
Make notes about salary, benefits, and flexibility to ask at the right time - usually when the interviewer opens up these topics or during later stage interviews.
