What is Asilomar AI & Its Principles?

Artificial intelligence has entered into the home and work space of people around the world due to the beneficial tools provided by it for day to day usage. AI’s continued development, led by the following principles, will offer incredible opportunities to benefit and empower people for times immemorial.?

The research and development of Artificial Intelligence (AI) has been constituted into 23 guidelines popularly known as the Asilomar AI Principles. The Asilomar principles outlay AI research and developmental issues, ethics, values and setting ground rules for making the development of beneficial AI easier.?

The Asilomar AI Principles are subdivided into 3 classifications: Research, Ethics & Values and Longer Term Issues.?

Research?

  • Research - The main goal of AI research should be for the creation of beneficial intelligence, rather than undirected intelligence.?
  • Research funding – Monetary Investments in AI research should be allowed only upon being ensured of its beneficial use.?
  • Science-policy link - There should be a constructive, clear, precise and healthy exchange between policy AI researchers and policy-framers.?
  • Research culture - A culture of cooperation, trust, well-being and transparency should be adopted among AI developers and researchers.?
  • Race avoidance - AI systems development teams should enthusiastically collaborate to sidestep corner-cutting on safety standards.?

Ethics and Values?

  • Safety - AI systems should be safe, secure and protected throughout their operational lifetime, and verifiably so where pertinent and practicable.?
  • Failure transparency - If an AI system causes damage, injury or harm, reasons should be possible to determine why.?
  • Judicial transparency – A satisfactory explanation should be provided by an autonomous system involved in judicial decision-making which should be auditable by a competent human authority.?
  • Responsibility - Advanced AI systems designers and builders are patrons in the moral repercussions of their use, misuse, and actions, with an accountability and prospect to shape those consequences.?
  • Value alignment – Aligning with human values should be the upmost assured goal and behavior of designing highly autonomous AI systems throughout their operation.?
  • Human values - AI systems should be designed, functioned and operated so as to be attuned with ideals of human dignity, cultural diversity, freedom and rights.?
  • Personal privacy - Persons should have the right to access, manage, govern and control the data they generate, given AI systems’ power to analyze and utilize such data.?
  • Liberty and privacy - The application of AI to personal data must not unjustly restrict people’s real or apparent liberty.?
  • Shared benefit - AI technologies should benefit, assist and empower as many people as possible.?
  • Shared prosperity - The economic prosperity created by AI should be shared largely, to benefit and assist all of humanity.?
  • Human control - Humans should select how and whether to delegate and allow decisions to AI systems, to complete human-chosen objectives.?
  • Non-subversion - The power conferred and entrusted by control of highly advanced AI systems should respect and progress, rather than subvert, the social and civic practices on which the health of society sustains.?
  • AI arms race - An arms race in lethal autonomous weapons should be evaded.?

Artificial intelligence has already provided beneficial tools that are used every day by people around the world. Its continued development, guided by the following principles, will offer amazing opportunities to help and empower people in the decades and centuries ahead.?

Longer-Term Issues

  • Capability caution -?Unanimity and consensus are a must have to circumvent strong suppositions regarding upper limits on future AI competencies.
  • Importance -?Advanced AI could represent an insightful transformation in the history of life on Earth, and should be planned for and managed with appropriate care and resources.
  • Risks -?Risks posed by AI systems, especially cataclysmic or existential risks, must be subject to planning and mitigation efforts commensurate with their projected impact.
  • Recursive self-improvement -?AI systems intended to recursively self-improve or self-replicate in a style that could lead to rapidly snowballing quality or quantity should essentially be subject to strict safety and control measures.
  • Common good –?Super Intelligence should only be developed in the service of extensively shared ethical ideals, and for the advantage of all humanity rather than one organization or state.
