What is Artificial Intelligence

Artificial Intelligence (AI) replicates human intelligence in machines programmed to think and learn like humans. Two different types of AI are narrow and general. Narrow AI, also known as weak AI, performs specific tasks, and most AI applications have this classification. General AI, also known as strong AI, is a theoretical form of AI with the ability to understand, learn, and apply intelligence to accomplish various tasks.

The three types of key technologies are machine learning, deep learning, and natural language processing. Machine learning uses statistical techniques to help machines improve performance on a task using algorithmic experiences. Deep learning is machine learning using neural networks with multiple layers to analyze various levels of data abstraction, which is helpful for image and speech recognition. Natural Language Processing (NLP) focuses on the interaction between machines and humans using natural language. NLP enables machines to understand, interpret, and respond to human language.

AI capabilities are being discussed, evaluated, and implemented across various industries, including education, finance, and technology. However, the best way for individual users to learn AI is to try it. Therefore, I recently conducted an AI experiment to familiarize myself with its capabilities using pre-determined prompts. I performed the test using a ChatGPT called ChatOn, and the experiment lasted less than 25 seconds. The timing and accuracy of the results made me an avid user of AI.

In less than 25 seconds, AI provided me with the following results:

  • A dinner recipe solely based on the readily available ingredients in my pantry
  • A 10-step get-out-of-debt plan
  • A 60-minute science lesson plan for 6-8-year-olds on the ecosystem
  • A 10-step risk management plan based on the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST)
  • An 8-step application development process based on the Software Development Lifecycle (SDLC)

AI is exciting and seemingly offers endless capabilities; however, individuals are encouraged to perform security due diligence, exercise caution when using AI, and understand policies when using AI at work or school.
