What is Art Therapy? Unleashing Creativity for Mental Wellness

  • Art therapy combines the creative process with psychotherapy, creating a powerful tool for enhancing mental health and emotional well-being. I usually say something like “It’s like regular psychotherapy but I'm specially trained to help you use art as a way to communicate a feeling”

  • You don’t need to be an artist to benefit from art therapy. It’s about self-expression, not artistic talent. Everyone can participate, regardless of their skill level. It’s about the process, not the final product.?

  • Art therapy can involve a range of creative activities, including drawing, painting, sculpture, collage, and more. Each medium offers different ways to explore emotions and experiences. I also add writing and creative storytelling into sessions. If you don't want to get your hands messy, there are ways around that!?

  • Licensed art therapists lead sessions, providing a safe, supportive environment where individuals can explore their feelings and work through challenges creatively. Art therapists are trained masters-level clinicians. Most art therapists have extensive training throughout their program and will need to take an exam and have up to 1,500 postgraduate supervised clinical hours before full licensure. Unfortunately, there is no national art therapy license so each states rules are varied.?

  • Through art, individuals can access and express emotions that might be difficult to articulate with words, offering an alternative pathway to emotional exploration and understanding. Or maybe you are REALLY good with words, let’s break through some of that and see what's really going on for you through the art.

  • Engaging in creative activities has been shown to reduce stress and anxiety. Art therapy allows individuals to channel their emotions into their work, providing relief and fostering a sense of calm. Normalizing using creative expression in and out of the session can help with longer-term coping skills.?

  • As individuals create art, they often gain insights into their thoughts and feelings, leading to greater self-awareness and personal growth. Seeing your unique feelings and self-expression externalized into your art can be moving.

  • For those who struggle to express themselves verbally, art therapy offers a unique way to communicate and process emotions without relying solely on words.?

  • Art therapy is used in a variety of settings, including hospitals, schools, mental health clinics, and private practices. It’s effective for people of all ages and backgrounds.?

  • Whether used alongside other therapies or on its own, art therapy is a valuable tool in the broader spectrum of mental health care, helping individuals heal and thrive. Some may say, it’s underutilized and sometimes difficult to attain.
