What are Arc Fault Detection Devices (AFDD)?


Arc Fault Detection Devices AFDDs are devices installed in consumer units designed to protect from arc faults. AFDDs work with microprocessor technology which analyses the waveform of the electricity. They detect unusual signatures, which would signify an arc of the circuit. This will cause AFDD to turn off the power preventing an electrical fire.

What causes an arc?

An arc is caused by an electrical current jumping between the gap of 2 conductive materials. The most common causes of arcs are worn-out contacts, a break in a cable, loose connections and damage to any insulation. essentially damage to electrical equipment/devices could cause an arc.

Why do I need an AFDD?

The primary advantage of installing an AFDD lies in the protection it offers. By effectively identifying and promptly responding to both series and parallel arc faults, it significantly reduces the risk of potential fire hazards within electrical circuits. This proactive approach not only enhances safety but also provides homeowners and occupants with added peace of mind regarding the integrity of their electrical systems.

Are AFDDs Required?

AFDDs are not required in most circumstances, however they are recommended. AFDDs are required for socket outlet circuits (up to 32A) where people are likely to sleep e.g. in high-risk residential buildings, in homes, in care homes and in purpose-built student accommodation.

Will my electrical installation be safe to use without AFDDs?

If your electrical installation is covered by either an EIC (Electrical Installation Certificate) or an EICR (Electrical Installation Condition Report) your electrical installation should be safe to use unless damage is caused to the circuit after the issuing of these certificates.

How much do Arc Fault Detection Devices cost?

The cost is fairly broad for AFDDs they range from £70-£200 this is dependent on the type and rating.
