There’s a great story about Abraham Wald, a genius mathematician.?During world war II, he was approached by the United States Air Force (USAF) with the thorny problem of how they could reduce the number of of bombers that were being lost to enemy fighter planes.

What he came up with was a remarkable, counter-intuitive analysis, that completely changed how the USAF were thinking about the problem.
