Andy Reid, head coach of the Kansas City Chiefs and winners of the 57th?Super Bowl, predicted before the game that the team with the “right mindset” would likely win the Super Bowl.
Reid said, “When you cut to the chase, there’s a lot of talent on both teams. But to ensure you have a solid game and come out on top, the players and coaches must blank out all the hype that goes with the game. It’s a big game for everybody. It’s the Super Bowl. But what matters is having the right mindset.”
A simple definition of mindset is a way of thinking. It’s how we think and make sense of the world around us and our view of our capabilities and attributes.
You might argue that yesterday’s Kansas City Chief’s 38 to 35 win over the Philadelphia Eagles had little to do with mindset and more to do with the pass interference call in the fourth quarter, which gave the Chiefs a chance to wind the clock down for a game-winning field goal.
Depending on one’s mindset, I suspect there will be a world of difference in how people view the game and the interference call in the fourth quarter.
Andy Reid got it half right when he said, “The team with the right mindset would likely win the Super Bowl.” Reid’s insight is valuable for anyone with big dreams. If you work on your career or craft, doubting yourself, minimizing your accomplishments, and seeing it all through a negative lens, you will set yourself up for failure. As we work for what we want, our chances for success may often lie within our mindset and how we interpret and approach life after the victories and losses.
Whether we are playing in the Super Bowl, leading a team, growing a business, or being a parent. Our mindset is a big deal. It shapes our lives and determines whether we unlock our happiness and find success.

America’s first mom on Super Bowl Sunday!
Travis and Jason Kelce’s mom Donna is the first to have two sons who played against each other in a Super Bowl. Jason plays for the Eagles, and Travis plays for the Chiefs. She said she feels blessed to be the mother of two NFL players and two good people.
When asked about the spotlight on her and the media interviews, Donna said, “I don’t know why they want to talk with me, but I’m okay with it. I’m just me. People either accept me for who I am…not the most beautiful human being, I’m very average, but I’m a good mom, and I think everybody can relate to it.” They’re the ones that put in all the hard work and did everything. I just drove them places.”
Yesterday’s Super Bowl was an incredible display of football talent and determination. Yet the game's final score will never match the lessons Donna Kelce taught us. So, Donna, thank you for demonstrating what Coach Andy Reid said about winning and mindset.
