What Americans Want And What the Candidates Deliver
In my last posting on BREXIT I used a natural systems model to illustrate some of the purpose, power and leadership issues facing the British and the EU.
With so much noise and demonization of the presidential candidates, I wondered if I could use the same model to pull out the “natural” purpose of the candidates. By “natural” I mean the innate purpose hidden behind all their actions and free from positive and negative evaluations; free from their successes and failures. How would these patterns compare to what Americans want?
The American information is coded from lists of American Values. Secretary Clinton’s and Donald Trump’s data are obtained by coding their statements on inaugurating their respective presidential campaigns. The coding calculates the degrees of openness and closedness in their choice of ends and means in the data. So the statements made in the charts are interpretations of generic combinations of degrees of openness and closedness and not the words of the candidates.
The model reveals nine degrees of purpose, from the most open to the most closed, and each is represented by a color. The colors, using the natural systems logic of the model, accurately represent the social and psychological content of each cell. Note the similarity between statements in all three charts that have the same color.
Each of us has our own set of values. If you substituted yours for the Americans’ how would they compare to those of the candidates?
(The model can also make statements about power and leadership, but as it holds that purpose is the source of our power, we are able to be very simple and clear by making all the statements in this post about purpose.)
