What if Alzheimer’s took over your Facebook Memories?
“Remember this? Remember that day, with those people? Remember? That’s you. Right there, in the photo.”
It’s difficult to know what it feels like for someone suffering from Alzheimer’s disease, but today, for World Alzheimer’s Day, the France Alzheimer Association along with the agency BEING (TBWA\Group) are putting everyone on the spot.
On September 21st, over 4 million people across France opened their Facebook accounts and were greeted with #Memories, a post showing a picture they couldn’t possibly remember, because it wasn’t a photo of them.
Some might have thought, “This must be a mistake; the algorithm got messed up.” Others wondered if their mind was functioning correctly. Clicking on the post brought them to a Facebook page called Memories, created by the France Alzheimer’s Association. Because for people with Alzheimer’s disease, not recognizing their own memories is their everyday reality.
With #Memories, the France Alzheimer Association and BEING wanted to give everyone a glimpse of what it feels like to be faced with a memory they no longer have.
For many, it’s difficult to imagine what it’s like to not remember where we last left our glasses, forgetting a loved one’s name, or our personal history vanishing completely. Today, thanks to the powerful #Memories campaign aimed at spreading awareness on this still widely misunderstood disease, we were put in the shoes of someone who struggles daily with the illness.
Worldwide, 44 million people suffer from Alzheimer’s or a related dementia. In France alone, 850 thousand people are living with Alzheimer’s, and 3 million people are indirectly affected by the disease. Alzheimer’s is widely spread but still misconceived and often insufficiently addressed.
So next time you go through your Facebook memories, remember how truly precious they are.

2 年My husband was diagnosed 3 years ago with dementia after he began to lose things. He would accuse someone of stealing, even in the night. He was on medication but his symptoms progressed to anger and short fuse over little things. This was a man who was soft spoken, slow to anger and gentle. It was such a change for us to try to manage a whole new way of living. He is 67, I'm 66 and I felt so stressed sometimes. I didn’t know what each day will start with. I retired in April that year and was with him 24/7. I have been researching for a while now, and I think this has helped.
