As many of you here in Singapore would have seen, the Land Transport Authority’s (LTA) announcement earlier in January of its plans on a definitive switch to the new SimplyGo payment platform for public transportation didn’t go quite smoothly.
A relook and reversal on Jan 22 may have soothed some commuters’ grievances but no doubt the episode did raise several questions. Why did LTA need to phase out the card-based ticketing system for adult public transport users? Would a transition to SimplyGo still happen eventually? When? The issue will make it to Parliament when it sits in February, with MPs already having filed questions. Till then, we’ll be paying heed to why this all matters to Singaporeans.
