What is Agile about?

What is Agile about?

When discussing Agile with the executive leaders and founders, I come back again and again to the idea of Agile and the reasons why it was invented.

Agile is a set of principles and practices for software development and project management that emphasizes flexibility, collaboration, and customer satisfaction.

Agile methodologies are designed to help teams respond to changing requirements, deliver working software quickly, and improve the overall quality of their products.

The Agile manifesto, published in 2001, outlines four core values that guide Agile development:

?????????Individuals and interactions over processes and tools

?????????Working software over comprehensive documentation

?????????Customer collaboration over contract negotiation

?????????Responding to change over following a plan

Some of the most popular Agile methodologies include Scrum, Kanban, and various scaling frameworks.

Scrum is a framework for managing and completing complex projects. It is organized around "Sprints," which are short, time-boxed periods (usually 2 weeks) during which specific goals are accomplished.

Kanban is a visual method for managing and improving workflows. It helps teams visualize their work, limit work in progress, and maximize efficiency.

Scaling frameworks are designed for organizing many teams to work together using Agile principles effectively at the enterprise level.

In general, Agile methodologies promote a culture of continuous improvement, where teams are empowered to make decisions, adapt to changing circumstances, and deliver more value to customers.

What's novel and original about Agile?

Agile emphasizes flexibility and collaboration. It is different from traditional management, also known as the Waterfall method, in several ways.

One key difference is that Agile focuses on delivering small, incremental portions of a product on a cadence of equal periods of time, called "Sprints," rather than trying to deliver the entire project all at once.

This allows for more frequent feedback and adjustments to be made throughout the project.

Additionally, Agile places a strong emphasis on collaboration and communication among team members, whereas traditional management may have a more hierarchical structure.

Agile also prioritizes delivering working software over creating plans or writing documentation. It was recognized that creating a plan takes a lot of effort.

Unfortunately, front-loading all the decisions can't be justified economically. The accuracy of decisions reduces rapidly due to the constantly changing business context.

The main idea of Agile is to deliver software with speed and test it in the real environment to see what needs to improve next to maximize the value.

Every small change in a product may bring added value and open new opportunities. Companies can use a rapid cycle of innovation to leverage the value of each change and grow faster.

This post came in my feed, so I consider myself invited to comment. The summary combines good-n-old fundamentals and some additional interpretations. A few comments: -Popularity of?an agile methodology is not an indicator of its success.?Today, it is the opposite, with some least agile/adaptive 'scaling frameworks', gaining the biggest market share, because of heavy PR/sales/marketing. -Scrum?- is really not a framework for managing and completing complex projects.?Scrum is a light-weight empirical process (the word framework is ok to use), to develop proDUCTS.?Of course, its scaled versions, like LeSS/LeSS Huge and Nexus maintain the same concept - proDUCTs. -"The main idea of Agile is to deliver software with speed..." - this is probably the biggest mistake organizations make, by equating agility/adaptiveness with speed.??Agility is about adaptiveness, ability to 'turn on a dime for a dime', flexibility, not gaining super-sonic speed. Side note: the co-creators of the Agile Manifesto:?Bob Martin, Jon Kern and Andy Hunt will be speaking throughout the year.?: https://www.meetup.com/large-scale-scrum-less-in-nyc/events/past/ Thank you for writing this post.
