What is Agile and Scrum: A Guide for Beginners

Have you ever wondered what Agile and Scrum are and why so many organizations use them for project management and development? Let's break it down.

What is Agile?

Agile is a way to think about software development projects. Agile’s philosophy is based on 4 key principles:

  1. Valuing individuals and interactions over processes and tools
  2. Working software over comprehensive documentation
  3. Customer collaboration over contract negotiation
  4. Responding to change over following a plan

What is Scrum?

Scrum is a methodology that helps teams implement Agile principles. Scrum outlines a set of roles, events, and artifacts designed to improve project delivery. Scrum’s 3 main pillars are transparency, inspection, and adaptation. Scrum also emphasizes five core values: commitment, courage, focus, openness, and respect.

Scrum Team Roles

1. Product Owner: Responsible for maximizing the value of the product. They manage the Product Backlog and ensure the team understands the project goals.

2. Scrum Master: Facilitates Scrum practices, helps the team stay focused, and addresses any obstacles.

3. Development Team: This is a cross-functional group who work on delivering the product increment. They are self-organizing and decide how to accomplish their tasks.

Scrum operates in iterative cycles called Sprints, which include several key events:

Scrum Events:

  • Sprint Planning: A meeting where the team selects items from the product backlog to work on during the sprint and defines a plan to achieve the sprint goal.
  • Daily Stand-up: A short daily meeting where team members discuss progress, plans, and any obstacles.
  • Sprint Review: A meeting at the end of the sprint to showcase the completed work to stakeholders and gather feedback.
  • Sprint Retrospective: A meeting to reflect on the sprint process and identify areas for improvement.

Scrum artifacts act as guidelines for product development plans. Each artifact has a focus in which progress can be measured.

  • Product Backlog: Contains all features, enhancements, and fixes required for the product
  • Sprint Backlog: Items the team will work on during the current Sprint
  • Increment: The usable end product of a Sprint, meeting the Definition of Done
