Downhole motor (PDM drill) is a volumetric downhole power drilling tool that uses drilling fluid as power and converts liquid pressure energy into mechanical energy.?When the mud pumped by the mud pump flows into the motor through the Dump Assembly, a certain pressure difference is formed between the inlet and the outlet of the motor, pushing the rotor to rotate about the axis of the stator, and transmitting the speed and torque to the drill through the universal shaft and the transmission shaft?to achieve drilling operations.
What are the Components of a Downhole Motor?
Power section Assembly
The power section is the primary component responsible for generating the torque and rotation required for drilling.?
It comprises a rotor and a stator, which work together to convert the hydraulic power from the drilling fluid into mechanical power.
The rotor is a helical-shaped steel bar that rotates inside the stator, a rubber-like material with a helical cavity.
As the drilling fluid flows through the power section, it creates pressure that causes the rotor to rotate within the stator.?The Power Section?is the heart of the?drilling motor, which determines the dynamic performance.?
Coupling Assembly
The function of cardan shaft is to convert planetary motion into fixed constant rotation of drive shaft, to transmit torque and speed from motor to the drive shaft, and to the bit.
Downhole motor shall be disassemblied as quickly as possible after use to examine cardan shaft. If it is found out that wear degree is over?maintenance standard, relevant consumable components shall be changed promptly. If not, downhole motor can not be running normally?due to over run time of cardan shaft.

How Does a Downhole Motor Work?
The operation of a downhole motor begins with the drilling fluid, also known as drilling mud?or mud motors, being pumped down the drill string.
Downhole motors basically consist of a helical rotor and a rubber coated stator housing. When the drill mud flows through the motor, the cavities between the stator and rotor are filled. The rotor then performs an eccentric rotational motion that is forwarded to the drill bit as drive power.
As the drill bit rotates, it cuts through the rock formations, creating borehole. The drilling fluid carries the cuttings back to the surface, where they are separated from the fluid and discarded. The drilling fluid is then recirculated back down the drill string, continuing the drilling process.
