What is Adult Development?
It is how we humans make and construct meaning. Also known as ‘ego development’ as it includes the ego, self, and whole person. It is a continuous process within a person and their meaning making, and as a result is constantly reshaping and evolving how that person makes sense and meaning in any given situation.?
Simply put, it is evolution. Just as a child’s sense of how the world works, and of their own place in the world, is continually remade considering new information obtained while growing up, so it is with adults considering their ongoing experiences.
Developmental theory helps with our understanding. Frames of development such as DISC, Insights, Strengthfinder and MBti do not predict success in leadership neither do they promise capability. Leaders succeed through a variety of strengths but there is no one-mould-fits-all approach. Although they are all wonderful instruments, they cannot of course predict the future.
There is a realisation to move away from descriptions and into developmental assessment.
What level of sophistication are you at as a leader? If your level of sophistication doesn’t encompass that of others in your organisation, how do you interact with that? What do you notice?
Tuning into developmental theory will support and aid this shift.?
Hope rests with our business leaders and the individual leadership of today - rather than in the institutions we have historically looked to. There is an urgency to really understand these times and to be able to interact with and transform them if we are wanting to be truly effective.?
So how do we do that??
