What Actually Mattered This Week: Zelensky’s Churchill Moment
WHAT ACTUALLY MATTERED THIS WEEK
President Zelensky made a surprise trip to Washington D.C. in his first confirmed trip outside of Ukraine in the ten months since Russia’s invasion.
After meeting with President Biden, he made an impassioned speech to a packed House chamber, asking for more aid and vowing that Ukraine will never surrender to Russian aggression.
Democrats and Republicans can’t agree on much…but (nearly) every member gave President Zelensky a standing ovation.
The trip marks a major success for both American and Ukrainian presidents.
The Taliban banned girls from attending elementary school shortly after banning university attendance, effectively barring all women’s education in Afghanistan.
Knowledge is power, so this shouldn’t come as a surprise.
This is a devastating week for basic freedom in the country.
Congratulations to Donald Trump for being the first US president referred by congress for criminal charges.
In the same week, The House Ways and Means Committee voted to make his long-hidden tax returns public for the first time.
At least he still has burgeoning his NFT business going for him.

2022 started and ended very differently for Vladimir Putin and Volodymyr Zelensky.
Putin has gone from all-powerful to global pariah. Zelensky from untrustworthy former comedian to TIME magazine's Person of the Year.
It's one of the oldest lessons in the history books: political power can be fleeting.

On GZERO World, I look back at 2022 and forward to 2023 with two frequent guests of the show: former US State Department official Anne-Marie Slaughter and The Atlantic contributor Tom Nichols.
Lots to talk about: Ukraine, the state of American democracy, and Xi Jinping's rocky year.
Does Russia still have game after its disaster of a war in Ukraine? Did US democracy dodge a bullet with the unexpected result of the midterms? And has walking back zero-COVID humbled Xi on the year of his CCP coronation?
For a longer, wider-ranging version of my interview with Slaughter and Nichols, check out the GZERO World?podcast.

WHAT TO READ THIS WEEK
“Hades, Argentina” is a guided tour through the late-Cold War underworld of Argentina's military dictatorship, which then becomes a journey into the psyche of a still-traumatized people. Those who open the book with little knowledge of Argentina's recent history will recognize a story of trans-generational pain that continues in one form or another in every nation on Earth.?

2 年With more than 10 months since Russian invasion, such meetings and speeches are the only success stories for US and Ukraine. Pity to see such trivial matters to be labelled as achievements.
