What Actually Mattered This Week: US Jobs Report, Trade Threats, Lab Accusations
Let the GZERO newsletter help you make sense of global news
WHAT ACTUALLY MATTERED THIS WEEK
My thoughts on some of this week’s biggest news stories:
Record 20.5 million American jobs lost in April. Unemployment rate soars to 14.7%
14.7% unemployment rate. Worst since the Great Depression.
And it doesn’t come close to reflecting how many people can’t make a living right now.
U.S. and China trade chiefs to speak as Trump threatens deal
Instead of threatening a trade war, Trump should offer reciprocal suspension of tariffs with China while the world is in recession.
The American working class needs help the most. It’s the easiest win available.
Coronavirus: World leaders pledge billions for vaccine fight
And the United States…did not attend.
Mike Pompeo: "enormous evidence" coronavirus came from Chinese lab
The US has serious and legitimate arguments to blame China for the initial coverup of COVID-19, but claims without evidence that the virus originated in a Wuhan lab undermines US credibility and coordination with allies.
Even Australia—one of the countries most inclined to support the US on China—says there’s only open source material in US “intelligence” shared linking coronavirus to a Wuhan lab. Inadequate to substantiate Pompeo’s claims.
Prefer long-form analysis? Here are my thoughts on coronavirus and the Sweden myth, why America's lasting advantages may allow the country to emerge stronger after covid-19, and a potential new virus-inspired cold war between the US and China.

GRAPHIC TRUTH
YOUR GZERO WORLD
Many of us experienced the major economic impact of the Great Recession from 2008-2010. The definition of a "depression" is harder to articulate, even for economists, because the US hasn't had one since the 1930s. But as unemployment rises and lockdowns to limit the spread of the coronavirus threaten the existence of businesses here in the US and around the world, we ask the question: Is another depression a possibility, and what would that look like today?
On this episode of GZERO World, I pose this question to Columbia professor, economic historian, and author Adam Tooze. The two discuss the strength of the US and global economies before and during the COVID-19 pandemic, and realistic timeframes for when the financial outlook will improve.
For a longer, more in-depth version of my interview with Tooze, check out the GZERO World podcast.
