WHAT ACTUALLY MATTERED THIS WEEK

Russia fired experimental ballistic missile at Ukraine, Putin says

The?Biden administration responded to Putin using North Korean troops against Ukraine by lifting a ban on long-range missile strikes into Russian territory for the first time in 1000 days of war.

Responding to that response, Putin launched a?hypersonic intermediate-range ballistic missile at the Ukrainian city of Dnipro.

While definitely an escalation, it’s worth noting that Russia has used nuclear-capable missiles against Ukraine before.

No matter what the internet tells you, this doesn’t mean nuclear annihilation is coming.

ICC issues arrest warrants for Israel's Netanyahu, Gallant and Hamas leader

Since the International Criminal Court has no enforcement mechanism, that warrant doesn’t mean much (just ask Vladimir Putin).

Matt Gaetz withdraws as Trump’s nominee for attorney general

Gaetz was (by far) Trump’s most problematic appointee as president-elect: he faced several “hard no's” from Republican senators who needed to confirm him.

Helping the Trump administration was the right move for Gaetz, who was an obvious distraction since his nomination was announced.

I wouldn’t worry about him too much. I’m sure he’ll have a number one podcast by the end of the year.

Police arrest ex-Bolsonaro aide, four others in alleged plot to kill Brazil's Lula in coup

It’s now virtually certain that Jair Bolsonaro won’t be able to run for president of Brazil ever again.

THE GZERO WORLD WE’RE JUST LIVING IN

THE GRAPHIC TRUTH

YOUR GZERO WORLD

How worried should we be about population collapse? Two-thirds of the people on Earth live in countries with fertility rates below replacement levels of 2.1 children per woman. Experts warn that?the global population will start falling within 60 years, dramatically impacting the future of work and social security. In the US, Vice President-Elect?JD Vance?has repeatedly expressed alarm over falling birth rates.?Elon Musk?has called population decline “a much bigger risk” to civilization than global warming. Places like Japan and Italy are already grappling with shrinking workforces, skyrocketing retirement costs, and healthcare systems stretched to their limits. So, we are heading toward demographic catastrophe, and can governments do anything about it?

On “GZERO World,”?I sit with?Jennifer Sciubba, president and CEO of the Population Reference Bureau, to discuss population decline, the global fertility crisis, and why now is the time to reorient our economic and social welfare systems for an aging future.

“The governments that do not adjust their systems to deal with what you actually have, which is an aging smaller population in the future,” Sciubba warns, “They will have a problem."

DIG DEEPER: GZERO DAILY BY IAN BREMMER?

How world leaders are preparing for Trump’s return

Welcome to Trump’s international honeymoon – it may not last long, but at least nobody’s having any fun.

In my column this week I explain why Trump's ability to get concessions from other countries early on will be greater than during his first term.

WHAT TO READ THIS WEEK

End Times: Elites, Counter-Elites, and the Path of Political Disintegration by Peter Turchin

A question on many Americans’ minds after a very divisive election season: how did we get here? In “End Times,” Peter Turchin skips partisan jabbing and opts for a data-driven approach to explain why America’s societal instability was all but inevitable.

DEEP THOUGHTS

"You may encounter many defeats, but you must not be defeated. In fact, it may be necessary to encounter the defeated, so you can know who you are, what you can rise from, how you can still come out of it." —Maya Angelou

A few remarks, - ICC arrest warrants for war criminals Netanyahu and gallant mean a lot - they are war criminals indicted for genocide and the ICC’s 124 signatory countries are obliged to arrest them if they travel to any of them; - People are surprised/upset at Trump nominating Matt Gaetz for AG? They elected Trump who is a convicted felon and actually found liable and fined for sexual assault; - There’s no population collapse - the World population is increading. There’s just a problem of distribution among countries.
