WHAT ACTUALLY MATTERED THIS WEEK

Jan. 6 charges against Trump would add to his mounting legal peril as he campaigns for 2024

Some of the legal charges against Trump are politicized (notably, New York).

But most, like the looming Federal charges, are not.

None of this will change the high likelihood that Trump gets the GOP nomination, and it only modestly diminishes his chance to win again as president.

Political support or opposition to Trump matters more to most voters than any indictment, however serious.

This is a solid indicator that democracy in The United States is in trouble.

There is still a Haiti crisis

A “catastrophic spiral of violence” is happening 700 miles off Florida.

That’s just far enough for Americans not to pay attention.

Russia escalates military tensions in Black Sea after blowing up grain deal

Blocking grain shipments in this corridor will only hurt people that are already most in need.

Russia is undermining its relations with the Global South accordingly.

YOUR GZERO WORLD

Here’s one of the United States' worst-kept secrets: its flawed classification process. Whether it’s the unnecessary classification of material or the storage of top-secret documents behind a flimsy shower curtain in a Mar-a-Lago bathroom, it’s crucial to address our approach to confidentiality. Joining GZERO World to discuss all things classified, including those documents in Trump’s bathroom, is former Congresswoman Jane Harman. As the ranking member of the House Intelligence Committee after 9/11, the nine-term congresswoman has insider knowledge of the matter.

According to Harman, “The only good reason to classify documents is to protect our sources and methods, how we got information.” The 9/11 Commission identified a lack of information-sharing among agencies such as the CIA, the FBI, and NSA as a key reason the government was unable to stop the attacks. Over-classification of information played a significant role in this failure. Approximately 50 million documents are estimated to be classified each year, although the exact number remains unknown—not due to classification, but because the government struggles to keep track of it all. In the words of former US Solicitor General Erwin Griswold, some “secrets are not worth keeping.”

DIG DEEPER: GZERO DAILY WITH IAN BREMMER

Despite unpopularity, Biden remains the overwhelming favorite for the Democratic nomination

There are three possible pathways for Democrats to get a non-Biden nominee in 2024 (well, technically four, barring a serious health incident)

  • he exits the race willingly
  • is forced to drop out, or
  • is defeated in a contested primary

& none of these scenarios are remotely likely to happen.

i don't agree NY charges are politicized. The family had a fake charitable foundation , PROVEN! He scammed millions at Trump University started in NY. Trumps are banned from opening charities in NY. All of his dealings are fraudulent because he lies to the banks (heard of Alantic City?) the man in history to have a casino go bankrupt) And, FYI, every property he's owned, first he doesn't pay the contractors, and says sue me, then he sues the local government to reduce his taxes, and they all cave into it. Is that illegal? no, but doing that then turning around and telling banks its worth more-then not paying back the loan-that's fraud.

amazing trump medicine show

Ian did I miss any mention about the gathering clouds around foreign money and the Biden’s? There’s 1)the laptop 2)money flows to numerous entities to obfuscate source and destination 3)multiple whistle blowers who seemed to convey credibility testifying to slow-walking and outright barriers to investigation 4)FBI credible informant form 1023. All of these hang together. Where is the investigative journalism which was also sorely lacking in the Russian collusion hoax from 2016? Yes, the republic is in trouble as the fourth estate turns a blind eye.
