WHAT ACTUALLY MATTERED THIS WEEK

Harris picks Minnesota Gov. Tim Walz for running mate

My initial response to Harris’ choice for vice president: less upside than Shapiro, less downside than Vance.

Her choice is going over quite well with the Democratic base.

The RNC on the other hand, used their first attack ad to dub Tim Walz “Chief Weirdo."

In a surprise attack, Ukraine sends a large force into western Russia

The upside of Ukraine capturing Russian territory in Kursk (if they could hold it) is leverage in eventual negotiations.

The likelihood of Ukraine maintaining control: extremely low.

How a student-run uprising led to the ouster of Bangladesh’s longest-serving prime minister

If you're not following the unrest in Bangladesh…you should be.

Parliament was dissolved and the country’s prime minister resigned/fled after weeks of deadly protests came to a head.

Nobel laureate Muhammad Yunus will head the country’s interim government.

UK PM slams Elon Musk for saying far-right riots ‘inevitable’

A massive amount of misinformation has been circulating on X around this week’s riots in the United Kingdom.

This is deeply worrying ahead of November’s US election.

TRUTHS, DAMNED TRUTHS, AND STATISTICS

The hometowns of Team USA:

THE GZERO WORLD WE’RE JUST LIVING IN

THE GRAPHIC TRUTH

YOUR GZERO WORLD

There's no getting around it: Argentina's new president, Javier Milei, is an odd duck. But beyond his penchant for cloned dogs, messy hair, and bombast, what’s truly radical about the South American leader is his plan to save Argentina’s economy.

When he ran for office, the economics professor-turned-TV pundit-turned-presidential-candidate vowed to eliminate Argentina’s central bank and threatened to replace the Argentine peso with the American dollar. But once he came to office, a more pragmatic approach to economic reform emerged. And in just six months, his administration has managed to slow Argentina's 300% annual inflation and turn a budget deficit into a surplus. "We have actually completed the largest reform in the history of Argentina," he proudly tells me in an exclusive new interview for GZERO World, highlighting the scale of his efforts to overturn what he calls "100 years of decadence."

In a wide-ranging interview with me, Milei also explains that his approach to foreign policy is marked by a mix of ideological commitment and pragmatic flexibility. He champions free trade and economic liberalization while acknowledging the complexities of dealing with autocratic regimes. Milei's staunch support for Israel is another defining aspect of his foreign policy. When Ian asks him about the Gaza war, his answer is simple and unwavering. "I will continue to support Israel right to the end."

MY QUICK TAKE

Kamala Harris’s foreign policy views are different in many ways from Joe Biden’s. Let me unpack it for you:

WHAT TO READ THIS WEEK

The Crisis of Culture: Identity Politics and the Empire of Norms

In “Crisis of Culture,” Olivier Roy offers a nuanced dissection of the origins (and contradictions) of identity politics in the twenty-first century. He tows a fine line by neither condemning nor embracing it but does offer a stark warning on the erosion of a national culture that is surely a conversation starter.

DEEP THOUGHTS

We must be willing to let go of the life we planned so as to have the life that is waiting for us.” — Joseph Campbell

It's just platitudes, cheerleader and puff pieces. Like it's a popularity contest. No policy, no interviews and no grasp of the issues. This person was a nongratta imbecile for 3 1/2 years; no accomplishments whatsoever. Nothing has changed other than democrats ignoring the primary voters. Even her VP pick is a loser. What's more, she lied to the Americans about their president. She owns the disastrous Biden presidency performance record. Wrong on all issues; inflation, energy, foreign policy, crime, economy, debt, education, DEI, spending, and the border. She comes across as a dingbat sophomore. Wrong for America to continue with this administration's failures. How Harris became the democrat's candidate is beyond belief. Twilight zone! Trump Vance in a landslide!

Ian ... Joe Biden as a foreign policy guru? Please recall Bob Gates quote ... he has been wrong on nearly every major foreign policy and national security issue over the past four decades.”
