WHAT ACTUALLY MATTERED THIS WEEK

SVB collapse: What happened and why it matters

The main reason 2023’s bank collapses aren’t like 2008:?it isn’t big enough to bring people together.

Instead, people are going after their villains of choice (Whether it be ‘woke banks’ or Trump-era deregulation).

U.S. drone crashes after encounter with Russian jet

Russia denied downing the American drone over international airspace, but the Pentagon released footage that appears to back up the American version of events.

Although one of the first direct military confrontations between the U.S. and Russia since Putin’s invasion of Ukraine…it’s really not too big of a deal.

France pension protests: Clashes after Macron orders rise in pension age without vote

Emmanuel Macron is raising the retirement age from 62 to 64…and doing so without approval from parliament (and large swaths of the country).

The French public swiftly responded by getting their Les Mis on.

Drug-smuggling submarine with 2 bodies, 3 tons of cocaine seized off coast of Colombia

And surprisingly, one bear at the wheel.

YOUR GZERO WORLD

The true cost of war is a lot more than tanks, helicopters, and ammunition, according to U.S. Senator Tammy Duckworth (D-IL), who joins GZERO World to reflect on the 20th anniversary of the US-led invasion of Iraq. Duckworth was a helicopter pilot who lost both her legs in Iraq, one of thousands of veterans who returned home wounded, and intimately understands that the costs of war go far beyond the conflict ending.

Is the United States fulfilling its obligation to provide adequate services for its veterans? In a conversation with me, Duckworth emphasizes “the obligation we have to our veterans” to live up to the promises we made to them. The United States made a deal with its veterans, she says, “to honor their service and sacrifices,” and it is “non-negotiable to break that promise.” Otherwise, how can we expect people to volunteer to serve?

Duckworth stresses that honoring veterans is not only the honorable thing to do, but also a military necessity. Watch the upcoming episode of GZERO World with Ian Bremmer, featuring Senator Duckworth as well as NBC News Chief Foreign Correspondent Richard Engel, on US public television. Check local listings.

DIG DEEPER: GZERO DAILY BY IAN BREMMER

Washington Watches as Beijing Bargains

it’s in the U.S. national interest to welcome others to broker peace where Americans can’t.

But China’s growing presence in the Middle East is not going to make Washington happy.

WHAT TO READ THIS WEEK

A Hacker's Mind: How the Powerful Bend Society's Rules, and How to Bend Them Back by Bruce Schneier

"A Hacker's Mind" by Bruce Schneier looks beyond attacks in cyberspace to help us see how the few find ways to live outside the rules set in the real world. It's an important and genuinely mind-broadening book on the human urge to cheat and the dangers it poses for our collective future.

Hi Ian - The true cause of SVB’s failure is still not well understood by so called experts and the press. Yes, factors like balance sheet management and lack of robust regulatory scrutiny were all contributing issues. Yet the true cause of the SVB’s failure was a shocking lack of Risk Governance and Accountability. Not understanding this fact, makes it harder to course correct next time. Here’s my take on it.
