WHAT ACTUALLY MATTERED THIS WEEK

My thoughts on some of this week’s biggest news stories:

Violence in Israel Challenges Biden’s ‘Stand Back’ Approach

Israel is the closest US ally in the Middle East.

True under Trump.

True under Biden.

The US is not an honest broker in the Israel-Palestine conflict.

Not to mention, Israel/Palestine is maybe a third tier foreign policy priority for the Biden Administration. Increasingly also true for most countries in the Middle East.

Bad news for the Palestinians.

Good news for Hamas.

Anti-Netanyahu Bloc Dealt Blow as Bennett Drops Coalition Talks

Anti-Netanyahu coalition talks fall apart. They would’ve required an Arab Party—impossible given present violence.

Netanyahu survives as PM to contest a 5th election...and the resolution of his corruption cases will have to wait.

Political beneficiaries of the fighting: Netanyahu, Hamas.

Losers: Israeli, Palestinian people.

GOP Ousts Cheney From Leadership Over Her Criticism Of Trump

Irony: The most obvious and uncontroversial political speech Liz Cheney has ever delivered is why she was removed from power.

Prefer long-form analysis? Here are my thoughts on what happens next in El Salvador and what it means for the U.S. border and why Scotland's move towards independence may prove more difficult than Brexit.

YOUR GZERO WORLD

India's latest COVID explosion hits home as one Delhi-based journalist speaks with Ian Bremmer on GZERO World about her own father's death from the virus. Barkha Dutt has been reporting on the pandemic in India since it began, but nothing could prepare her for the catastrophic second wave that has hit her country in the last few weeks—and that has now shattered her own family. Would her father have survived if the oxygen tank in his ambulance had been working, or if the ambulance hadn't gotten stuck in Delhi traffic? She asks similar questions of her national government. Why was it caught so unprepared by this second wave, well over a year into the pandemic? Why has India, the largest vaccine manufacturer in the world, been so slow to vaccinate its own citizens? And how much of the blame falls at the feet of Prime Minister Narendra Modi?

For a longer, more in-depth version of my interview with Dutt, check out the GZERO World podcast.

WHAT TO READ THIS WEEK

Cuban Revelations by Marc Frank

With the recent retirement of Raul Castro and a new generation of Cuban leaders taking over, it’s a nice time to revisit Raul’s leadership and the economic reality that drove the Cuban Communist Party towards gradual economic liberalization. This 2013 book by Marc Frank, a US-born journalist based in Cuba for more than three decades, provides an excellent overview of the 1990’s special period, the transition of power from Fidel to Raul, and the impact of US policy on the island, including the Obama-era economic opening that has since been reversed. The latter is particularly relevant given the Biden administration’s desire to re-engage the island and the still - pressing need for economic reforms that a new generation of Cuban leaders will need to navigate.

Why is it these people keep fighting , let's go back to the origin , the title adapted by the Zionist as Israel, in actuality before 1939 there were no Israel but Palestinians, a truce was sign for them the Zionist to settle ,as settlers practicing Zionism, then as settlers from Europe ,they took the title as the State of Israel, became in the 80's the largest purchasers of armory even more that the USA then, and now took the title as Israel, sadly, a people ,the very people who you sign a treaty with you guys now turn and killing them , in their own land you all came and live under a Truce. Practicing Zionism , it's a shame and ingratitude., am not saying it's right for Palestinians to retaliate, but how dare you restrict a people in their own land . Wasn't it not a treaty sign ,the Zionist would of not been there , WHAT IS WRONG WITH GRATITUDE, YOU ALL SHOULD BE THANKFUL ,IF YOU BELIEVE IN GOD.
