What Actually Mattered This Week: Israel Launches Raids into Occupied West Bank

WHAT ACTUALLY MATTERED THIS WEEK
Last month: Israelis assassinated a top Hezbollah commander.
Last weekend: several hundred missiles were launched at Israel from Lebanon.
Believe it or not, the conflict on the northern front was not as escalatory as many feared.
If Hezbollah wanted to overwhelm Israel’s military defenses, it could.
But one thing we’ve learned after 10 months of Israel at war is that Iran/Hezbollah are steering clear of actions that could escalate into a broader Middle Eastern war.
Let me walk you through it:
Short answer: yes. Israel launched a major military operation into the occupied West Bank this week.
Raids killed at least 16 Palestinians, and Israel said nearly all of them were Hamas militants.
Israeli Foreign Minister Katz said the occupied West Bank is a “war in every sense” and anti-terror operations should entail “the temporary evacuation of Palestinian civilians.”
Russia launched another massive missile/drone assault on Ukraine’s energy infrastructure.
It was the biggest air attack since the war began: 236 projectiles were launched…and Ukraine’s air defense took down 201.
When Egyptian footballer Mohamed Salah joined Liverpool Football Club, fans halved their rates of anti-Muslim tweets relative to fans of other top clubs.
This paper gives some practical evidence about how we can reduce hate crimes and speech. It’s a must-read.

THE GRAPHIC TRUTH
YOUR GZERO WORLD
Vice President Kamala Harris closed out a historic week at the Democratic National Convention in Chicago that rallied Democrats around themes of freedom, joy, and unity. Harris used the DNC to try to show US voters that she can unite all Americans behind a ‘new way forward,’ but did she succeed in making the case for a Harris-Walz ticket?
On “GZERO World,” former Congresswoman Donna Edwards and presidential historian Douglas Brinkley joined me to give their take on a truly unprecedented DNC that capped off one of the most extraordinary months in modern political history.
Joe Biden and Democrats passed the baton to a new generation of political leaders, showcasing the talent and diversity within the Party. While the energy in the United Center was like nothing Dems have seen since Barack Obama led the ticket, Harris will be the first to point out that she is still very much the underdog in this election. And with polls showing the presidential race is essentially tied between the two parties, will any convention bump be too little too late to defeat Donald Trump?

2 个月The expansion into the West Bank certainly escalated, but it did not begin now. I recall https://www.wsj.com/world/middle-east/iran-weapons-west-bank-israel-war-8bf12d1f from last October, and similar coverage finally reaching the NYT in April. Iran's sponsored militias were set up to take over and/or launch attacks from the West Bank all along. While operations out of there are currently limited, forces were effectively being staged there and the expansion of violence was known since at least last October to be inevitable. Also, it is not so clear that Iran is trying to avoid escalation. Hezbollah deescalated after both falling under intense Lebanese pressure and having a whole lot of its militant capacity destroyed in a wave of Israeli airstrikes.
