WHAT ACTUALLY MATTERED THIS WEEK

After Navalny's death, US targets Russia with more than 500 new sanctions

Will America’s latest round of sanctions slow down Putin?

Unfortunately, no. The only way to do that is to arm Ukraine.

But Navalny’s death will only make it more likely that the US Congress will push funding over the line ($50 billion committed from Europe making a difference in the meantime).

Munich Security Conference talks marked by global 'lose-lose' anxiety

One of my big takeaways from Munich this year: Israel has become much more internationally isolated—including from friends and allies—than they think.

Former Rep. George Santos sues late night host Jimmy Kimmel for allegedly ‘deceiving’ him into creating Cameo videos

Very brave for George Santos to come out against lying.

U.S. pushes for U.N to support temporary Gaza ceasefire, oppose Rafah assault.

The Americans calling for a temporary ceasefire: the strongest pressure from the Biden Administration to date.

It still is not going to change much for the Israelis but does show Biden’s frustration with the massive amounts of civilian casualties in Gaza.

THE GZERO WORLD WE’RE JUST LIVING IN

THE GRAPHIC TRUTH

GLOBAL STAGE: LIVE FROM MUNICH?

Half of the world’s population will have the chance to head to the polls this year in dozens of critical elections worldwide. These votes, which will shape policy and democracy for years to come, come amid light-speed development in artificial intelligence. Generative AI could be used by domestic and foreign actors – we’re looking at you, Russia – to impact campaigns and undermine trust in democracy.

To meet the moment, GZERO Media, on the ground at the 2024 Munich Security Conference, held a Global Stage discussion on February 17 entitled “Protecting Elections in the Age of AI.” I spoke with Brad Smith, vice chair and president of Microsoft; Fiona Hill, senior fellow for the Center on the United States and Europe at Brookings; Eva Maydell, an EU parliamentarian and a lead negotiator of the EU Chips Act and Artificial Intelligence Act; and Kersti Kaljulaid, the former president of Estonia. Check out the recording below.

DIG DEEPER: GZERO DAILY BY IAN BREMMER

Why Iran is pulling back from the brink

As Israel threatens an offensive into Rafah, Iran is pulling itself away escalating the conflict.

No American troops have been targeted by militia attacks since February 4…

This means pressure from Tehran seems to have worked (for now).

Let me explain why:

WHAT TO READ THIS WEEK

Navalny: Putin's Nemesis, Russia's Future?

This might seem an odd moment to recommend a book called “Navalny: Putin’s Nemesis, Russia’s Future?”?But Jan Matti Dollbaum, Morvan Lallouet and Ben Noble’s 2021 portrait of the man who just died in a Russian penal colony offers a vivid portrait of that country’s most famous dissident – and helps us better understand why Vladimir Putin refused to let his voice be heard inside Russia.

DEEP THOUGHTS

“Everything will be all right. and even if it won't be, we'll have the consolation of having lived honest lives." - Alexei Navalny

Biden frustrated with Israel? Only because he lost the votes of the anti Israeli genocide which is going to cost him dearly in November, otherwise, supporting Israel is “in his DNA”, remember? Too bad for Biden Israel doesn’t give a damn about him or any U.S. president, they will all do what Israel commands ALWAYS as pro Israel lobby has them on a short leash. The last president that bucked the trend was Eisenhower who forced Israel, France, and the uk to call off their attack on Egypt in 1954 Sueze Canal crisis.
