What Actually Mattered This Week: Belarus Plane Hijacking, Biden-Putin Summit
Let the GZERO newsletter help you make sense of global news
WHAT ACTUALLY MATTERED THIS WEEK
My thoughts on some of this week’s biggest news stories:
Belarus Forces Down Plane to Seize Dissident; Europe Sees ‘State Hijacking’
If Belarus’ Lukashenko had to trade jailing Protasevich (the opposition journalist) for the EU measures taken against his regime this week, he’d take it in an instant.
Sanctions have been ineffective because Europeans (and Americans) are unwilling to go after major oligarchs close to Putin and Lukashenko or impose sectoral sanctions that bite.
Much more serious punishment must be imposed or the dictator wins.
Biden and Putin to Meet in Mid-June, in a Summit Fraught With Tensions
Biden and Putin agree to a Geneva Summit on June 16.
The US didn’t wait for a clearer Russia response on Belarus before the announcement, which means the Biden administration is keen to show some stability/predictability in the Russia relationship (unlike with China).
Hong Kong electoral reform: LegCo passes 'patriots' law
“Unpatriotic”–disagrees with Beijing
Prefer long-form analysis? Here are my thoughts on why the ceasefire between Israel and Hamas shows how little control Biden has over the Middle East.

GRAPHIC TRUTH
YOUR GZERO WORLD
Latin America's largest economy has endured years of economic hardship, a barrage of political scandals, and one of the worst pandemic death tolls in the world. So where does Brazil go from here and how much longer can its president hold onto power? Former President Fernando Henrique Cardoso, who remains one of the most influential political figures in the country, joins me to discuss Brazil's increasingly divided society, the potential fate of its current far-right leader, the prospects of his most likely challenger (known to all as "Lula") the climate crisis in the Amazon, and the country's complicated relationship with China.

WORLD IN 60 SECONDS
On the anniversary of George Floyd's murder, have race relations in the United States tarnished its reputation globally?
The EU levied sanctions against Belarus. Now what?
Finally, with the US adding Japan to the, "do not travel list," what's the outlook on the Olympics?

WHAT TO READ THIS WEEK
Value(s): Building a Better World for All by Mark Carney
Carney’s latest book gives us an economist and banker’s eye-witness account of how the creation of value has destroyed values. It offers a path toward managing future crises by asking the right questions and offering consistently compelling answers. This is an excellent book on economics for non-economists. He knows what he's talking about, and after reading this book, you will too.
