What Actually Mattered This Week: Another U.K. Prime Minister Bites the Dust
WHAT ACTUALLY MATTERED THIS WEEK
Liz Truss resigned as prime minister after only 45 days in office, earning her the title of shortest—and most shambolic—premiership in British history.
Nearly every part of her historic effort at an economic and fiscal policy was defenestrated (yes, thrown out a window).
Good riddance, no one could possibly have been less fit for the job.
Rogue regimes are sticking together.
The White House told reporters Iranians have been on the ground in Crimea, helping pilots use Iranian drones to attack Ukraine.
That makes it official: Tehran is now a player in this war.
This is the moment Putin has been waiting for.
TRUTHS, DAMNED TRUTHS, AND STATISTICS
Democracy is a better system.
It’s more just.
It’s more humane.
But, it’s not winning.

YOUR GZERO WORLD
This year, the annual fall meetings of the World Bank and the IMF are all about global economic doom and gloom.
How bad will it get? Are we headed toward a worldwide recession? And who will bear the brunt of the pain?

To get some answers, GZERO World with Ian Bremmer has two very special guests: World Bank President David Malpass and IMF Managing Director Kristalina Georgieva.
Malpass tackles the elephant in the room: whether he's a climate denier. His odds of a global recession? 50/50. But the World Bank chief is more worried about the poorest countries going backwards on their development goals.
For her part, Georgieva explains the three drivers that'll likely trigger a worldwide economic slowdown next year. She also predicts that the coming winter will be bad for Europe — but the next one will be worse.
For a longer, wider-ranging version of my interview with Malpass and Georgieva, check out the GZERO World podcast .

Wild Swans covers three generations of women in twentieth-century China. One part memoir and one part eyewitness history, Chang catalogs the extraordinary journeys of her grandmother, mother, and self through different walks of life in the ever-evolving Chinese society of the past century. A gripping read that brings history to life through the female lens, Wild Swans is an entertaining, informative—and ultimately uplifting—gift to any reader.

2 年Think to understand it Ian Bremmer you have to understand how our democracy runs. It may seem odd to many, but most other country’s don’t have a parliamentanty democracy. I am not going to profess I know all the mechanisms and what goes on behind closed doors. And we know what the press report is more “ what they want you to believe” more than just laying out the facts. We all knew and shuddered and wondered how Liz Truss got the job…. Something when wrong there…. But the system cut her rein short and and the system will install another PM….. yes the operation parties will hiss and boo and shout foul….but that’s their job, they are the runners up of the last general election, the also rans.. the never made it to 1st place, blah blah… it’s there job to make it difficult and the governing party on the run….. that is what democracy is about, about being free to have your say, about being free to make change when required. Yes the mechanisms are complex… but it works. USA are stuck with Biden until the next election. Like you were stuck with Trump. Out the 2 systems…. Ours may work in odd and baffling ways…. But the system allows for a collective of MPs on your team, or others teams or/ and a general election to move a bad PM out.

2 年Sorry, Ian, I don't find that comforting. I can only hope we take Abe Lincoln's thoughts and we seek "Our better angels" and revive our democracy. And to be better citizens and help our world-wide communities. Enough shelter, enough good food and education for all. We need all these young, fine minds for the future

2 年David Malpass should be heard more often! I miss hearing his wisdom on markets from his prior career. So glad to hear him clarify his climate change comments - onward with saving the world!
