Access control is a crucial component of data security that enables organizations to regulate who can access and use their property, information, and resources. This process involves two key steps: authentication, which verifies a user’s identity, and authorization, which determines the appropriate level of access that the user should have based on their credentials.
Access control can also be used to restrict physical access to facilities like campuses, buildings, rooms, and data centers. To authenticate users, access control systems rely on a variety of login credentials, including usernames and password, PINs, biometric scans, and security tokens such as key fobs or cards. Many access control systems also utilize multifactor authentication (MFA) which requires users to pass through multiple layers of verification before gaining access to the protected premises or room.
Once a user is authenticated, access control then authorizes the appropriate level of access based on the user’s credential. There are four main types of access control methods that organizations can choose from, depending on their specific security and compliance requirements.

The first is discretionary access control (DAC), in which the system owner or administrator sets access policies. The second is mandatory access control (MAC), which grants access based on an information clearance, with a central authority regulating access rights based on the users security level. The third role-based access control (RBAC), which grants access based on defined business functions rather than the users identity. The fourth is attribute-based access control (ABAC), which grants access based on a set of attributes and environmental conditions assigned to users and resources.
