What’s ABR Streaming and How Does ABR Work?

Adaptive Bitrate (ABR) streaming adjusts video and audio quality based on fluctuating network conditions, ensuring smooth playback on unmanaged networks like the internet. By encoding videos at multiple bitrates and resolutions, ABR caters to varying bandwidths, devices, and screen sizes, unlike cable TV, which offers consistent quality over managed networks.

The process begins with creating a bitrate ladder, where the source video is encoded into multiple renditions, such as 1080p at 5.0 Mbps or 480p at 2.0 Mbps, depending on the expected bandwidth of the target audience. These renditions are then packaged into small chunks or segments, which are served to users via a streaming protocol like DASH or HLS. The video player uses a manifest file to request specific chunks based on real-time bandwidth estimation. For instance, if bandwidth drops suddenly, the player switches to a lower bitrate chunk to maintain uninterrupted playback.

This approach delivers the best possible quality for each user’s network conditions. Advanced algorithms like BOLA further optimize bitrate switching and bandwidth estimation, ensuring efficient and seamless video streaming.

What is CTV or Connected TV?

Connected TV (CTV) refers to televisions connected to the internet, enabling viewers to access online content through streaming and video-on-demand (VOD) services. Unlike traditional linear TV, which requires cable or satellite subscriptions, CTV provides more convenience and flexibility, offering personalized and interactive viewing experiences. It is closely linked to over-the-top (OTT) media, where services like Netflix, Hulu, and Disney+ deliver content directly over the internet.

CTV plays a vital role in the modern streaming ecosystem for viewers, advertisers, and content creators. Viewers benefit from diverse, on-demand content and interactive features like recommendations and social media integration. Advertisers gain access to a large audience of cord-cutters and can leverage CTV’s data-driven environment for targeted, measurable, and engaging campaigns. Content creators and distributors can experiment with innovative formats and deliver high-quality content via the internet, expanding their reach to diverse audiences.

Despite its advantages, CTV presents challenges such as market fragmentation, privacy concerns, and quality issues stemming from internet connectivity. Consumers may face difficulty navigating multiple devices and subscriptions, while publishers must adapt to complex monetization models and discoverability hurdles.
