What These 7 Industry 4.0 Technologies Actually Mean To Manufacturers

I cringe each time I'm about to publish an article on Industry 4.0, because that makes me a mere evangelist. That's a problem because I could easily land on the wrong side of history, because ultimately, it is the users and those that engage the technologies who are going to determine how exactly these technologies are going to be used on the factory floor. Not the evangelists nor the technology creators. But yet, to move the discussion to the centre of the conversation we are we are gonna have to start from somewhere, right?

What I have for you today is an infographic summarising what AR, IIoT, Big Data, Edge Computing, Digital Twin, Autonomous Robots, and Additive Manufacturing actually mean to manufacturers.

I'd love to hear your thoughts on this topic. If you got value out this article it would mean a lot to me if you could share it with your network. And for the latest Industry 4.0 best practices delivered straight to your inbox please sign up here

I believe Augmented Reality has an amazing potential to minimize specialized training for historically infrequent tasks. Think yearly PM’s on material handling robots or medical equipment. OEM’s could send a kit with a pair of AR goggles loaded with the guided diagnostics and instructions to be performed by site maintenance staff. This could be huge with machinery becoming more and more specialized complicated by dwindling numbers skilled technicians and trades.

I am also interested in hearing more about the application of advanced technologies in manufacturing processes and process automation. Cleanroom Technology magazine has recently featured an article about pre-engineered modular design and digital twins were mentioned. I can imagine the advantage of using augmented reality in cleanroom design! I am certainly keeping an eye open for this topic!
